The Origin of the Difficulty Between ti and Stokes. j Numerous speculations prevailed as to t] the cause of Stokes' rash act, but the one n which seemed the most probable, and was best Relieved, attributed the occur- ? rence to a feeling of long and bitter ha- .. tred held by Stokes toward his rival because of the letter's constant triumphs tj over him in the courts and in business transactions. This feeling grew more intense after each successive defeat, and finally reached its culminating point in c consequence of Judge Brady's adverse h dscision on Friday conccrning the pub- ? lication of Kisk'slovo letters, the severe o and humiliating cross-examination o which which Mrs. Mansfield and him- u eeif were subjected to on Saturday and o his rumored indictmont ov me uranu ? Jury for black-mail on Fisk's comnlaint, y all three of which events followed each other in rapid order. Persons of his ae- ^ quaintance supposed thpt he must have j heard of the bench warrant for his ar- > Teat while at Yorkville Police Court, and : that he left that place infuriated with . the prospect of being put iftto jail a i second time through his adversary's influence, and determined to avenge his real or fancied wrougs in a summary t manner. Stokes proposed to let Mrs. Maris- h field act as arbitrator of their differences, e and Fisk' assented to the proposal. The next develop- a ment in the fight between the two men was the arrest and imprisonment of ? Stokes on a charge of embezzlement. *. Death of Laura. Faik.?A San Francisco dispatch, January 3, says that lira. Laura D. Fair, the convicted murleress. died in prison in that city, on Saturday, December 30. Mrs. Fair was , woman of great personal attractions nd strength of character, and was finely ducated. She once occupied a good ocial position in the Southern Slates, ?ut had more recently been the wife or aramourof a great many men. For everal years she was the mistress of A. \ Crittenden, a prominent lawyer and )emocratic politician of San Francisco, jast spring Crittenden appeared to bo triving to break away from the siren, ndscnt for his wife, who was then visiug th? Atlantic States. Mrs. Fair rmed herself with a pistol and killed Iritteuden as he was sitting by the side f his wife on the Pacific Kail road ferry oat, as Mrs. Crittenden was arriving in iecity. Mrs. Fair was tried for murder, nd was convicted after a long and exeijg trial, and sentenced to be hanged, he defence was insanity, and the defenant's counsel asked for a new trial on arious technical grounds, chief of which as the alleged prejudice of some of the iry. The case was arguetf before the uprerae Court, but postponed from time ) time, and was still pending when eath in prison solved the question hich had agitated the courts and the unmunity.
