Sheridan Kaowles. Of all the eccentric individuals I ever encountered, Sheridan Ivnowles T...1 ...... was, i LuniK, une ijifuiest. juugc, gcutle reader, if the followiug anecdotes may uot justify my assertion. Walking one day with a brother dramatist, jdr. Bayle Bernard, in Itegent's Quadrant, Knowles, was accosted by % gentleman in these terms : "You're n pretty fellow, Knowles! After fixing Jour own day and hour to dino with t>~. you never make your appearanco, u;id from that time to this not a word have wo heard from you!" "I couldn't help it, upon my honor," replied Knowles: "and I've been so busy ever since I haven't had a moment to write or call. How are you all at home?" 'Oh, quite well, thank you: but come now, will you name another day, and keep your word?" '-I will?sure It i*?? , *rr_n ... i?t .1 o c?t it I Will "wen, wimt u;iy r oiiuu we; say Thursday next?" 'Thiirsdnj'? Yes, by all means?Thursday be it." "At six ?" "At six, I'll be there punctually. My love to 'em all." Thank ye. .Remember, now. Six oxt Thursday," "All right, my dear ; 'W : I'll be with you." The friend ? y>a: yd, a>id Knowles, relinking his with that of Bayle I^rnard, said, , xv i?'s that chap?" not having the idea of the name or residence of :i?e man he had promised to dine with n the following Thursday*, or the inle resting "family at home," to whom he had sent his lovo. Upon one occasion when he was acting in the country he received an anxious letter from Mrs. Ivr.owlos, informing him that the money??200, which he had promised to send up on a certain day, had never reached her. Knowles immediately wrote a furious letter to Sir Francis of- t kof tinin of thn fumrl Af the Post office, of which, of course, 1 cannot give the precise words, but beginning "Sir," and informing him that on such a day at such an hour he himself put a letter into the Post office at such a place, containing the sum of?200 in bank notes, and that it had never been delivered to Mrs. Knowles : that it was a most unpardonable piece of negligence, if not worse, of the Post office authorities, and that ho deman- ; ded an immediate inquiry into the matter, the delivery of the money to ' Jiis wife, an apology for the anxioty and trouble its detention had occa- ] sioned them. By return of post he received a most courteous letter from Sir Francis, beginning "Dear Sir," as, ' although they were personal strangers j to each other, he had received so much pleasure from Mr. Knowles' works \ that ho looked upon him as a valued friend, and continning to say that ho (Knowles) was perfectly correct, ii;;; stating that at such an hdnr ho had ?i - i? .1 ' pusiuu a ivbiur uo ?? uununiim^ bank notes to the amount of ?200. bat that unfortunately, he had omitted not only his siguaturo inside, but the address outside, having actually sealed up the notes in an envolope containing only the words. "I send you the money," and posted it without a direction ! The consequenco was that it was opened aVthe chief office in London, and detained until some inquiry was maVlo about it. Sir Francis concluded by assuring him that long before he would receive his answer the money would be placed in Mrs. Knowles' hands by a special messenger. Knowlcs wrote back : "My dear Sir, you aro right, and I was wrong, flod l>le-a you ! I'll call upon you when 1 come to town." Aha /I a** n I .T /. I went to the queen's stables at Windsor Castle one day, and this is what 1 saw. Nine and thirty horses in nine and thirty stalls, with cach horses namo painted over his head; his skin as smooth and shining as the skin of a cherry, and his tail cut oil' square and straight. The creamcolored horses that are never used but when the queen opens and porogues Parliament, are kept somewhere else, I and I dare say she has plenty of other ! horses at her other palaces ; but when I . itr* . i i ? 4/v ? ^_ (sue is ai \t musor suu mis lu uui the best she can with only thirtynine. And these are not all for her own private use either: eight of them are for the use of her attendants. Then iu an end stall thero is Heeior, the glossy-black charger that belonged to Prince Albert, and that nwbody has ridden since the princo consort I died. And there are the pretfy Shetland ponies that the Princess Louise ( drives four in hand,?Angas, Linda, i Margaret, and Carlo. A BltEEZE IX THE UNITED STATES Q Court, on Monday.?Quite an unusual incident occurred in the United States Court room, on the 1st inst. Pending the trial of Dr. Avery, and alter Col. McMaster had been addressing the jury for about ten minutes, Mr. Corbin called the Court's attention to the fact that Dr. Avery, the prisoner" on trial, was liot present in court. Judge Bond thereupon questioned Col. McMaster as to the whereabouts af his client. Upon his requesting the Court to excuse him from answering the Court'3 question, the judicial brow of Judge Bond grew dark, and a heavy clould enveloped the bench ?thesituation being relieved, somewhat, by the calm demeanor of Judge Bryan. Upon Col. McAListcr'sdecling to answer, swer Judge Bond ordered a rule to be served upon him, to show cause, this day, ' why his name should not be stricken . from the mil of attorneys, for refusing to answer a uuestion as to the whereabouts 00 of his client, &e., &c. The matter will come up to-day. Dr. Avery, it is understood, has forfaited his bond and retired to parts unknown.
