one day with a brother dramatist,
jdr. Bayle Bernard, in Itegent's
Quadrant, Knowles, was accosted by
% gentleman in these terms : "You're

help it, upon my honor," replied
Knowles: "and I've been so busy ever
since I haven't had a moment to write
or call. How are you all at home?"
'Oh, quite well, thank you: but come
now, will you name another day, and

he had sent his lovo. Upon one occasion
when he was acting in the country
he received an anxious letter from
Mrs. Ivr.owlos, informing him that the
money??200, which he had promised
to send up on a certain day, had never
reached her. Knowles immediately
wrote a furious letter to Sir Francis

the Post office, of which, of course, 1
cannot give the precise words, but beginning
"Sir," and informing him that
on such a day at such an hour he himself
put a letter into the Post office at
such a place, containing the sum of?200
in bank notes, and that it had never
been delivered to Mrs. Knowles : that
it was a most unpardonable piece of
negligence, if not worse, of the Post
office authorities, and that ho deman- ;
ded an immediate inquiry into the
matter, the delivery of the money to '
Jiis wife, an apology for the anxioty
and trouble its detention had occa- ]
sioned them. By return of post he received
a most courteous letter from
Sir Francis, beginning "Dear Sir," as, '
although they were personal strangers j
to each other, he had received so much
pleasure from Mr. Knowles' works \
that ho looked upon him as a valued
friend, and continning to say that ho
(Knowles) was perfectly correct, ii;;;
stating that at such an hdnr ho had

bat that unfortunately, he had omitted
not only his siguaturo inside, but the
address outside, having actually sealed
up the notes in an envolope containing
only the words. "I send you the
money," and posted it without a direction
! The consequenco was that it
was opened aVthe chief office in London,
and detained until some inquiry
was maVlo about it. Sir Francis concluded
by assuring him that long before
he would receive his answer the
money would be placed in Mrs.
Knowles' hands by a special messenger.
Knowlcs wrote back : "My dear
Sir, you aro right, and I was wrong,
flod l>le-a you ! I'll call upon you when
1 come to town."

Th9 Queen's Horses.
I went to the queen's stables at
Windsor Castle one day, and this is
what 1 saw. Nine and thirty horses
in nine and thirty stalls, with cach
horses namo painted over his head;
his skin as smooth and shining as the
skin of a cherry, and his tail cut oil'
square and straight. The creamcolored
horses that are never used but
when the queen opens and porogues
Parliament, are kept somewhere else,
I and I dare say she has plenty of other
! horses at her other palaces ; but when

the best she can with only thirtynine.
And these are not all for her
own private use either: eight of them
are for the use of her attendants.
Then iu an end stall thero is Heeior,
the glossy-black charger that belonged

died. And there are the pretfy Shetland
ponies that the Princess Louise (
drives four in hand,?Angas, Linda, i

themselves in hospitals. The horses .<

In another part of the yard are the
harness-rooms and the beautifully ,

the other the carriage-houses. There a
phaetons, and state-coaches and ehaisos,
and basket-wagons, and sleighs,jvery
thing you can think of in the
jhape of beautiful carriages. The I
wheels are painted red, and thoj' have ;
linings and cushions of blue silken 1
damask, wrought everywhere with
the rose, the shamrock and the thistle
intertwined with the initials "V. II.'
It seems to mo tho queen must get so

on every thing, everywhere she looks.
Queen Victoria's own favorite saddle
horse is a dark bay, namod Flora, ]
and her carriage-horses for home
driving are Baioncss.. and Spinster.
The others are named Forfeit, Helen,
Roland, Pert, Faith, Malakoff Prison, j
Rupert, Tantalus, Outcast, Pierre j
Paste, Foil, Alma, Progress, Torch,
Faust, and Snyder. And tho horses
of the attendants are Philippi, An- ,

Court, on Monday.?Quite an unusual
incident occurred in the United States
Court room, on the 1st inst. Pending
the trial of Dr. Avery, and alter Col.
McMaster had been addressing the jury
for about ten minutes, Mr. Corbin called
the Court's attention to the fact that Dr.
Avery, the prisoner" on trial, was liot
present in court. Judge Bond thereupon
questioned Col. McMaster as to the
whereabouts af his client. Upon his requesting
the Court to excuse him from
answering the Court'3 question, the judicial
brow of Judge Bond grew dark,
and a heavy clould enveloped the bench
?thesituation being relieved, somewhat,
by the calm demeanor of Judge Bryan.
Upon Col. McAListcr'sdecling to answer,
swer Judge Bond ordered a rule to be
served upon him, to show cause, this day, '
why his name should not be stricken .

answer a uuestion as to the whereabouts 00
of his client, &e., &c. The matter will
come up to-day. Dr. Avery, it is understood,
has forfaited his bond and retired
