New York Spcrtnnen Raking in Enormous Winnings The telegraph has given us the xesult of the great race at Saratoga on "Wednesday, in which the hitherto invincible Longfellow was defeated by Helmbnld, but the detailed incidents of the conflict furiKaned by the New Yortc correspondents are so full of interest, and our readers who take a:i interest In bu^K things are so anxious for the particulars of the struggle, that we make tue following interesting ex tracts from the fuil and graphic re port in tne sun : Last night clouds overspread the sky, the air was damp, and everything indicated raia. The track was muddy, and it was thought that a clouded sky, even without rain, would not better a clouded bky, even without rain, .would not not better it. This morning the E"u shone brightly. The backers of Longfellow were tilled with joy. They ran him up clear above the thermometor. lie even went up :ic hitrh #700 to $200. Helmboiu \vh--> talked of; apparently he had no friends; but many old turfies saileu ..Lout the hotels and the ?lub houses quietly taking in the big odds. The rotunda of the Grand Union was Ailed with an eager crowd of fretting men. A few minutes after sunrise the gar dens and lawns in front of the cottages swarmed with ladies, who enthusiastically wagered heavy sums on Longfellow. Kot one of the fair ones sympathized with Ilelinbold. At the breakfast-t<*Me the great race was alone the topic oi conversation. By 7 o'clock the street in front of the Grand Union was thronged with, carriages# There was no du^t. The road was in splendid condition. Everybody was thoroughly awake and eager to get to the track. There must have been 25,000 strangers in Saratoga. EVEBTTIIINO WAS LONFELLOW. Not-a poolcoiild be sold on any horse in any other race. The quarter stretch was black with humanity. The rush to the pool stand was unprecedented. '\Eight hundred doflars in the pool, and L.ongfeliow sold," shouted Underwood: 44 'Ow much for L. AL Bold?"! Then the doctor would gaze neiv vously about the crowd until he would catch a wink or a iiuger uplifted, and he would resume: "Eight,hundred dollars in the pool, and I ain offered a hundred for 3j. M. BoldI" And so it would go, until the doctor reached from two hundred to two hundred and thirty dollars. But there were a great many quiet workers ou the quarter stretch. These would sneak through the crowd, shouting "Am a betting one hundred to thirty Longfellow wins this race!" At one time old John Harper, Longfellow's otvner, shouted through the multitude, singing out in a cracked voice: I've jist got $40 about my clothes, and i'll bet forty to fifteen that Longfellow wins this race!" All these bets were quickly takeu by iS ew ^brk city men. john Morbjssey backs helmbold. John Morrissey walked over the stretch, pointing his finger, at different men, saying: "I'm offering $30u0 to $1000 that' Helmbold wins." -lie took in#a dozen such bets within a dozen such bets with" in five minutes. Ffty dollar greenbacks were as thic< as leaves in Valombrosa. There were probably over 81,000,000 inside the Quarter of an acre. THE LADIES EXCITED. The ladies were apparently crazy. They wagered gloves, rings, handkerchief* and money, utterly regardless of the result. TllE BUGLE SOUNDED. The quarter stretch was cleared a:- if by magic. Jim McClellan, llelmbold's Jockey, sprang upon his horse with quiet confidence. He .core a bluejacket, with scarlet sleeve and cap. Joe Colston, Harper's colored jockey, the besLcolored rider in the world, fWlowod suit, .lie wore a bright orange jacket 'and pants and a red cap. Longfellow was a beautiful picture. His body was perfectly formed. His long quarters were clean cut, and his eyes were* as mild as those of an Eastern queen.
