Stj^Empcror of Germany raised fofrfHvee officers of the army and iSavy W the nobility for their services in the French war. Hardly any gencrus remain commuiwis. In Boston next month a very largo sale of India rubber boots and shoes is to be made. Six manufacturing companies have united to put on the. market 30,000 cases, containing 600. 000 pairs of shoes. A dividend is tho surplus, the result, the end of a transaction, divided among the shareholders?hence the word divide-ends. An apothecarj* originally carried his medicine about in jars?he was a pot-carrier?-thence ths word a-pot-he-carries. A publisher's prefacc to a late English book of importance says: "What calling is there more profitable to Bouls than that of a hard working publisher of good books?" Nothing, wo might say, save that.of the hard working editor of a good journal? but wo won't. The Salt Lake Tribune mentions a Utah mine which is turning out an average of 100 tons of oro per day, worth $135 per ton, over and above all expenses, making the handsome sum of $13,500 net profit for every twenty-four hours. This multiplied by 865 gives the astonishing low profit of $4,927,500 per annum. Of Mark Lemon, the editor of London Pnneh, it is said thut ho died without deserving the enmitj' of any man. beloved by all who had labored with him. respected men of all creeds and parties, being, nevertheless, one who had never sacrificed U*o independence of his paper. IIo had, says a friend, ,;a romantic faith in the power which ho directed. In this enthusiasm and devotion may be found the secret of his success as an editor." Queen Victoria, an English paper ?ays. is troubled with visions 01 m? poor house. It is said that tho tablo of tho Queen's servants is about the worst served of any in the country. A dispatch says that tho future Empress of Germany (tho latter Victoria's daughter) could not be. entertained by their mother at any of her palaces during their recent visit, owing probably to the miserly apprehensions of the lady. The weakness of tho human resolution is illustrated by a story which , fomos from Saratoga. The Rev. Mr ! Board man had determined to hold a prayer-meeting at tho gnto of the race-course, and in pursuance of his! laudable effort he had made arrange- j munis for the aid of some members of Young Men's Christian Association. The hour arrived ai.d Mr. Boardinan, wont to the spot, but he was so much astonished and disheartened to find that all the. members had gone inside tho gate to look at a hurdle race that he abandoned the meeting. Tho Connecticut Senate 1ms passed } a bill which renders null and void all { business dealings for liquors?enables i the p irchasereven of agla.'Sof whiskey t> recover back tho ton cents he pays for it!?declares null and void All sales, transfers, contracts, quit claims, mortgage*, attachment* and 1 e ?s, made in consideration (part or whole) of tho Pale of any spirituous liquor; makes null and void all leases of premises if liquor is sold on them ; punishes by fine of ?100 or a month in jail (or both) the sale of liquor to any minor under eighteen years of *go; makes tho person who sells responsible lor all damages done by drunken men, and permits any taxpayer to sue such seller whenever the drinker abuses his family. Other stringent provisions follow. The Greatest Railroad Feat on Record, i From the Chronicle & Sentinel. On Sunday, July 23d, a change in the gauge of the Ohio anil Mis-j iasippi Railroad was effected! throughout the entire length of the road, fromXJiucinnati to St* Loui*, n distance of 340 miles in.eight' bourse. Between daybreak and noon, . on Sunday morning, the rails were all torn from their chairs, lifted from the eross-iies, placed upon the new chairs provided for them, and firmly spiked down. It war an oil* day, and no traffic was interrupted. Preparations had been made for the event weeks beforehand. Xew cngiues and new rolling stock had been provided, and oii Monday morning business wein on, on a new gauge, with a new equipment, as if uo great revolution had taken place. But the revolution. which has taken place i3 an enormous one. 'i'he New York and Krie Iiailroad .and the Atlantic and Groat Wes jtcrn, broad guage .roads, which >vcrc absolutely dependent upon -ibis road for their Mississippi connections, by it lost a large and most important portion of their trunk line. The Ohio and Mississippi Koad, which was a New York road, becomes a Baltimore one, and a great feeder to New York in suddenly diverted into a rival city. This is what this change t?t gauge meuns. Baltimore and St. Louis will soon become closely allied* The Baltimore and Ohio Itoad, the Marietta and Cincinnati Road, the Baltimore and Cincinnati (a small independent link, affording direct communication with Cincinnati, approaching completion will fnrm one unbroken line of .railway of the same gauge, awl identified by interest, between Baltimore and St. Louis.
