over the State, of South Carolina .
WM^HEREAS information has been received by
V V this Department thai a certain fre?- man of
color, named Tom Archer, was, on or aboui fh^ 12il?
of March last, feloniously taken and canied away
from the house of widow Hill, near the Fish Dam
Ford, in t he District of Chester, by-two while men,
who called themselves Alexander Archer and
Harris. ^
NOW KNOW YE, -That to the intent the said
Archer and Harris may be brought toleg.il trial and
condign punishment for the abduction and offence
aforesaid, I do hereby offer a reward of three hundred
dollars for the a;>f>rehension and delivery of the said
Archer and Harris, or one hundred and fifty dollars
for the delivery of either of them, into any jail in this
State.
It is also stated that two white men of the above
names were at Kingston, in.Autauga county, Alaba
ma, about the 8tb or 9th of .April last, with the said
boy Tom Archer, and there offered him for sale as a
slave; hut on the said boy declaring he was a free
man, no sale could be effected ; and that they carried
him from there, and said they were eoinsr to Greens
borough.
Given under my hand and the seal of the State, this

RAN away from the Subscriber, from his resi
dence, on South Edisio, Willow Swamp. Or
angeburg District, S C., on Monday night, 23d Oct.,
a Negro man named HOWARD. Said Negro is well
proportioned, about G feet high, and of black complex
ion ? high forehead, a somewhat prominent nose, full
face, and no whiskers ; he has a scar on the inner
ankle of (I presume) the left foo', produced by a burn,
and on one of his arms a mark resembling a letter S.
Howard speak-* With plausibility and ease; is rather
assuming in his address, yet mild and humble in his
manners. He is a keen, shrewd fellow ? walks erect
and fast, and is apt to bear uncommonly on his toes
when hurried. According to his own accouut, he
originally belonged to Joshua Lee, a planter near
Clinton, VaM to which place it is supposed he will di
rect his course, or to Norfolk or Richmond He had
on when he went away, blHe pantaloons ari3 coat, ei
ther a blue or yellow vest, and a black hat. He took
away with him a pair of saddle-bags, and is supposed
to have a free ticket.
To any person who will lodge said Negro in jail, so
that I get him. if it be in this State, I will pay a re
ward of fifty dollars, and all reasonable expenses;
if in North Carolina, seventy-five dollars and ex
penses; if in Virginia or Maryland, one hundred dol

IN consequence of the increased and still increasL,
ing labors of the Subscriber's business, and the^
conviction, forced upon him, that his strength ands
health are unequal to it, he has been induced to asso
ciate Mr. F. W. GREEN, of this town, in business
with him. with a view to his assistance.
In announcing this arrangement, the Subscriber
cannot be so unmindful of his duty to this communi
ty, (of whose confidence he has so largely participar
ted, and for which he cannot feel too grateful,) not to
assure them, that his own undivided personal atten
tion, will continue to be, as heretofore, closely devo
ted to the business ? and that by express stipulation,
no article is to be brought into the Store^jhat does
not undergo his strictest scrutiny, and meet his ap
probation. The business will be conducted in his
own name and at the same stand.
In fulfilment of these promises, he can only offer

Strayed
'ROM the Lower Country, near Monk's Corner,
on the 10th of December last, two BAY
MARES ; one a low, thick-set animal, of light color,
and defect in the left eye ; the other a red bay, with
a small star and snip, and recently a sore back?each
a while hind foot. They were recently from Edge
field District, and were seen on the road, on the 14th
ult., some distance above the Eutaw Spring, and
will probably make their way up the State Road or
across to Orangcburgh.
A liberal reward, with all reasonable expenses,
will he paid for their delivery to Mrs LEGIJEUX,
Edgefielu Court House, or Mr. DAVID GAILLARD,
four miles below the Eutaw Spring, on the Nelson's
Ferry Road, St. John's Parish.

said, stating that he is now in the custody of the she
riff of Richland District, by virtue of a writ of capias
ad satisfaciendum, nt the suit of F. McCully, and
praying a rule to be served on the said F. McCully
and his other creditors, returnable before the Asso
ciate Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, at a Court
of Common Pteas to be holden in and forthe district
aforesaid, to shew cause, if any they can, why. the
said O. Hochstrasser should not. be discharged from
his confinement, according to the act of the General
Assembly- -of. this State, passed' for .the relief of insol-,
