Earthly Hopes.
BY VESTA If. crDWUBTIt.
One by one, as stars set at night,
Earth's brightest hopes depart,
Though long they linger, uueaife their light,
l'ainting life's landscape all too bright
For the peace of the trusting heart.
Thus one by one the-drops of bliss
Leak oat from the silver oup.
Leaving the stricken its emptiness,
Or worse, the dregs of bitterness,
Aa ? pledge for their trust and hope.
Bored ones are leaving one by ono ;
Youth and its gladness flee ;
What is the nest when the birds have flown?
When the fruit is gathered, the harvest done?
What is the refuse to thee ?
Thy days are passing one by one,
For thy life-work what shall thou win ?
For earth hast labored, for earth hast sown,
Its flowers are withered, its beauty gone,
And death is the wages of sin.
Miscegenation in Wisconsin.?Last

of being prcseut at their bridal. Judging
from the appearance of the unmarried couple,
as they marehed up through the streets

true love really tan smooth. They at once
Srocecdcd to the justice's office, followed

at which the woman seemed surprised,
and inquired the reason of it, saying that
when she married her first husband there
were not so many present. Squire l)ueasso

declined th6 honor of tying the knot, when
the woman declared she would not marry
a white man ifsho had to travel 1,000 miles.

An army friend has given us an anecdote,
in connection with tho capture of
President Davis, which we havo not seen
io print, and which is characteristic of the
roady wit of the Irishman. Of its truth,
(we mean tjie occurrence of tho anecdote, ;
of course) there is said to ho do doubt.
Here it is:
"A member of a Yankee Regiment,
which had captuicd President Davis,
marching along, with his command, amid
great oxultations, and enjoying a high dc
gree of personal cxhileration, incident to
tho occasion, camo across au Irishman,
leaning on his spado.
'Well," said tho Yankee, "wo'vo got
your President."
"Well," said tho Irishman, "then we're
even?the dovil lias yours." Sumter

New Kind of Collateral.?Imagine
one of those ragged little mudlarks,
who sweep the crossings, (and spatter all
vrho don't pay, accosting a gentleman
dressed in the height of fashion :
Mudlavk?'Please, sir, give me a cent 7

I have, mv little lad.'

Sweet.?A lady said to a geutlcman ;
who accompanied her and her sister from
church, 'Why, it rains?scud and get an
umbrella.
'Why said the beau, 'you are neither
sugar nor salt, rain will not hurt you.'
'No,' said the lady, 'but we arc losses,

"The Maiden's Prayer," written by Mr.
N. P. Willis, begins thus:
"She arose from her delicious sleep.
And put away her soft browu hair."
This maiden must have lived prior to
tho advent of the waterfall. At present,
the maidens put away "their soft brown
hair" before going to their 'delicious sleep.'
A lady once declared that she oould not
understand how gentlemen could sinoke.
"It absolutely shortens their lives," said
she. "I don't know that," replied a gen
tleiuan. "There's my lather who smokes
every day, and he is now seventy years
old." "YVell," was the reply, "if he had
never smoked, ho might have been eighty."
A pious negro, somewhere in this region,
whilst invoking Divine blessings in impassioned
strains, prayed with great fervor,
that vies and morality might "cover the
earth as tho waters cover th? nmnt "

A person was boasting that ho was
sprung from a high family in Ireland.?
"Yes," said a bystander, "1 have seen some
of the sarno family so high that their feet
could not touch the ground.
The Petersburg mine "crater" is now in
tho midst of a luxuriant cornfield, and is
itself planted in melons and fru t trees. A
correspondent who has been there writes :
"The immense excavation made by the ex
plosion is now nearly closed to the surface,
as it was oonvcrted to the uses of sepulture,
and contains, as I was assured,about 2,500
dead bodies."
Nineteen individuals who formerly held
positions in the rebel army, left Chattanooga

the Imperial army.

Am Uneasy Predicament.
We were the witness of a ludicrous in. cident
which ocourred in this oity a few *
days since, for relating which we crave the
indulgence of tho gentleman directly concerned?deeming
it too good a joke to be II
lost.
While Bitting at our desk, and laboring
assiduously, with pen, scissors and paste,
to make out a readable paper for our pat
rons, we were suddenly 'frightened from
our propriety,' by the hasty eucrnncc of a
gentleman, exclaiming, 'For God's sake, ^
help mo to see what's the matter ! I've
got some dreadful thing?scorpion or tarantula?in
the leg of my pautaloons ! Quick
?quick?help me !' n
We instantly roso from our chair, half
frighteued ourselves. Our friend had bro
ken in so suddenly and unexpectedly upon
us, and was so wonderiully agitated that
wc knew not whether he was indeed in his
seuses or not. We looked at him with a
sort of surprise mixed with dread, and 8
hardly knew whether to speak with, or seize
and conSne him for a inadj.an The
latter wo curao near attempting. Thcro
he stood, quivering and pale, with one
hand tightly grasped upon a part of his
pantaloons just in tho hollow of the knee.
'What's the matter?' asked we, at last.
'Tho matter !' he exclaimed: oh. heln
mc ! I've pot something here, which just
ran up niy leg ! i?ome infernal scorpion
or lizard, 1 expect! Oh, I can't let go;
I must hold it. Oh, thcro !' he shrieked,
I l'elt it move just then ! Oh, these pants
without straps! I'll never wear another *
pair open at the bottom as long as I live.
Ah ! I feel it again.'
'reel what ?' we inquired, standing at
the sauio time, at a respectable distanco
from the gentleman ; lor we had just been
reading our Corpus Chrisli correspondent's
letter about snakes, lizurds, and tarantulas,
and oegan to imagine some deadly insect '
or reptile in the leg ol our friends unmentionables,
as they are sometimes called.
I don't know what it is,' answered the
gentleman; help mc to sec what it is. I
was just passing that pile of rubbish there,
in front of your office, and felt it dart up c
my logs as quick as lightning'?and he 0
clenched his fist more tightly. If it had ?
been the neck of an anaconda, wc believe
ho would have squeezed it to a jelly.
By this time two or three of the news- (
boys had come in; the clerks and packing
boys hearing the outcry; stopped working
and editors and all hands stood around the .
sufferer with looks of m.ngled sympathy
and alarm.
'Bring a chair, Fritz,' said we, 'and let
the gentleman he seated.' r
'Oh, I can't sit,' said tlio gentleman; 'I
can't bend my knee!?if I do, it will bite
or sting me; no, 1 can't sit.'
'Certainly you can sit,' said wc ; 'keep
your leg straight out, and we'll sec what it j <
is you have got.' I '
4 Well, let nie give it one more hard j
squeeze; I'll crush it to death,' said he,' ?
ami again he put the force of au iron vice i a
upon the thing. If it had any life left, I
this last effort must have killed it.' lie
then cautiously seated himself, holding out
his leg as stiff and as straight as a poker.
A sharp kuifc was procured; the pun's
were cut open carefully, making a hole
large enough to aduiit a hand; the gentle- r,
man put on a thick glovo and slowly iu- J
sertcd his hand, but he discovered nothing.
We were all looking on in almost breathless
silence to sec the monstrous thing?
whatever it might be; each ready to scamper
out of harm's wuy should it be alive; J
when suddenly the gentleman bccamo, it
passible, more agitated than ever.
By heavens !' he exclaimed, 'it's inside
my drawers. It's alive, too 1 feel it!?
quick ! quick !?give me the knife again !' s
Another incision was made?in went the
gentleman's gloved hand once tnure, and :
lo ! out Came?fiis wife's stocking! | ^
How the stocking ever got there we are !
unable to say; hut there it certainly was;!
and such a laugh as followed, we haven't '
heard for tunny a day. Our friend, we! \
know, has told the joke hiiuself, and must !
pardon us for doing so. Though this is j
all about a stocking, we assure our readers j j
it is no yarn.?A. O. Picayune.

An Incident.?A "reb," who had long
languished on the sweets of a forced idleness,
consequent upon his occupation having
terminated with Lee's surrender, began j
to look about him for something to be, to j
do, or to suffer. Thinking himself sufficiently
reconstructed, ho applied lor work i
atone of the I >opnrtmcnts, presided over
by a Federal officer. j v
"Have you been in the rebel service ?" , '
he was asked.
"Yes, sir," was the reply. c
"In any buttles?" I
"About eighteen pitched battles, sir." 0
"Kvcr killed any Yankees?" ,
"No sir: never ki'led any."
"How do you know that?"
"Well, I couldn't kill uny of them."
"Why was that ?"
"Because they were all in thorear spec- j i
ulaiing; but 1 guess 1 slayed uboutathous j
unci uutcn ana Irish."
We did not learn 1*110(1107 the candor
of tliis "rob'' scoured him a place or not,
hut it certainly wa9 deserving of some reo ,
