Take six gallons of water, nine pounds of
salt, three pounds of brown sugar, one
quart molasses, 3 oz. saltpetre, 1 ox. red
pepper, and 1 oz. potash. Boil and skim it
well, and let it stand until entirely cold.
Then having robbed your meat with fine
salt, and paeked and closely filled in a
water tight cask, pour tho brine over it.
Alter standing six weeks, rcboil the brine
and return it to the tab. This reoipo an j

W?at Worn Caw Do.?Two young Uttto
residing in Martinaburg, West Vlrgiuia, who
were left utterly destitute and homeless by
reason of the rarages ot she into war, have sot
themselves to work ainoe the cessation of hos-,
tiiiues and nearly restored their propertr to
its normal condition. One of them personally
plowed and planted many acres of land. Their
neighbors built them a log house to live in
and extemporised a sort of oarn.
Horses were loaned to them, and the girls
with their own hands raised a profitable crop
of corn, with the proceeds of which they are
buying agricultural implements at Philadelphia.
In the place of the log house they havo
a comfortable dwelling and substantial barn,
and making such improvements upon.the property
they own as to render it more valuable

The National Intelligencer aays: " At Freedmen's
villages, Rev. J. T. Johnson, is performing
the ceremony of marrying the people, of
which three hundred ooupies will be married
by to-night, and making legal the old marriage
relations.. The spectacle is amusing. Squads
of twenty or more ooupies stand up and arc
married at once. These cousist of old and
youug, the aged aud the infirm, arrayed in all
manner of gew-gaw and cast-otT finery that
they could piok up. Many enter upon liie
oeremony with reluctance, and only oonsent
to the regulation, which is insisted upon by
the Freedmen's Bureau, when informed that it
is necessary to their new condition of freedom."
We suppose they will soon all be marched
to the oreek and properly baptized.
Heavy Taxes.?The new tax luws are so
heavy on the people of Alexandria. Va., that
many of them are moving beyond the corporation
limits in order to .scape the enormous
load. Independent of the internal revenue,
United States license. State and county tax?*s,
the city expoets to raise $200,000 out of a
population of eight thousand whites and
blacks.
Two-thirds of the stores are for rent, and
business is being driven frcm the place. The
Adams Express Company having been assessed
$50,000 by the muuicipal authorities, is among
the moving masses.
A heavy judgment 1ms been obtained ia the
Illinois Supreme Const by a North Caiolininu,
who, in 1S57, intrusted a sum of mony for
investment to a Chicago real estate broker.
Tho broker turned It to his own use during the
war and now claims that the confiscation act
justified him in doing so. The court gave
heavy damage for the plaintiff.
Judge Giles, of the Baltimore District Court,
decided the case of Bradley Bounton, n negro,
who applied for injunction against a railway
company for rofusing him transit. The Judge
said it presented no case for equitable action.
The case was dismissed.
Tho Kentucky Episcopal Convention were in
session at Louisville on the 30th ul\ It was a
distinguished ecclesiastical body.
