POET R Y. FKOM THE BOSTOI^ INTELLIGENCER. THE SEAS OA'S. WINTER lias a joy for me, While the Saviour's charms I read, Lowly, meek, from blemish free, In the snow drops pensive hear. SPRING returns, and brings along;, Life invigorating Luns; llark ! the Turtle's plaintive song Seems to speak hi* dying groans. SUMMER has a thousand charms, All expressive of his worth ; 'T? his Min that lights and warms, llis the air that cools the Earth. What has AUTUMN left" to say, Nothing of a Saviour's Grace ? Yes, the beams of milder day Tell me of his smiling face, ^.ight appears with morning dawn, 'While the Sun makes haste to rise; See his bleeding beauties drawn, On the blushes of the skies. Evening with a silent pace, Slowly moving in the west, Shows an emblem of his grace, - foint to an eternal rest. J f> " / ">' ? - . * -FftOM THE NEW-ENGLAND GALAXY. LEE'S PILLb, ...? [Prorrt the New-York National Advocate.} ^JVatt-SHrett is a kind of commer cial baromfcte*, and I always observe the countenances of men of business in , passing through that bustling street, verjr lately 1 was stopped by a commercial quidnunc, who in formal me ihut Mr. A. KC.D.E. and F. had failed^withiu three days, that times were uncommonly bad and prospccts very gloomy, and the re sult could not De foreseen. Inde pendent of the hazards of commerce, I could account for these failures.-** These houses, of some teu years standing, had-commencetl with small capitals; some with 110 capital, and instead of uniting industry, prudence and rigid ecoMky, a contrary course I )iA(! beiTn pursued, and the fust shock ? overwhelmed them. Look tn the houses 'of some of tta merchants, and see them furnished with a splen dor equal to that of British nobility; look at their mode of life and actual expenses, and say, Whether any business can bear such extravagance. 1 Heveral of these brilen fterchnnts have extended for ten years past, near 10,000 dollars per annum. in their houses, carriages and wines; can it therefore be surprisipg, that an accumulation of such expenses should lead to ruin. I have long observed with regret, the Nvanton extravagance of our merchants and traders. A store is rented {j^J.200 or 1500 dollars per annum* and a dwelling house at 1000 or 1200 dollars; and, a system "oKllffag corrosponding with feuch establishments, is adopted, which sets economy at defiance, and leads to ruin?and, by a pernicious ex ample attracts others into the danger os yorftex. Why should men waste why shonkt more money be aoed thart what may be neces ?thc decent comforts of ttfe ? wjiy will families plunge flu '-selves 'in itiin, merely to live a ie?v years in luxury? Is not such a course at war with common sense, and ?*. ith the duty which a man owes to society and his family? enn any business prosper under an annual domestic ex penditure of 10,000 dollars together with losses in trade? These reflec tions I made to myself as 1 entered Broadway and looked into astburn's; not a soul was ther*?ind not (me dollar would extravagant men take from their appetites, to purchase a mental banquet at so large a store house ; a crowd was entering the City-Hotel, and, as 1 follow all crowds to *idy character I fell in the current, which carried me up to the hall room, where, on a long table, which cov ered half tile saloon, a gor geous display of rich plated ware was seen?an auctioneer was selling the ware to many ladies and very few gentlemen, and the ladies were bid ding for articles the real value of which they were ignorant of. Now, thinks 1, while these amiable wives are so anxiously struggling to get rid of their husbands money, their hus bands, poor creatures, are toiling in the sun, borrowing at large premiums in %V all-street, and doing all to pre serve their credit, whiletheir unthink ing companions- are plunging them into deejH.T difficulties. One lady bid high for a plated soup tureBn? She shant h;we it, I am determin ed,said a cross litUe -woman, " I'll have it, cost what it will;*'?then commenced a system of out-bidding, until the articles was knocked oil' at twice their value. And who suffers ? said I. The husband. Surely, some reflection, some consideration, is due tc a toiling auxious, worried lnlsband,' who, while endeavoring to save a lollar in business, loses twenty by the extravagence of a wife. Why buy a plated soup tureen for forty dollars ? will not one of china for five dollars do full as well? wl\y buy plated wine coolers?plated toast racks, beefsteak plates and gravy dishes? If you cannot afford to have silver, then purchase china, which is more neat and economical. But, the eccentricities of fashion are ruining families by wholesale, and w hat is wasted for unnecessary articles would doubly pay for those which are in dispensable. If these things are not cfiecked, wc may complain {if the times with' out producing reform, and now is the time to commence the work of regen eration, and to use tirmness, where persuasion fails.
