U. P. D. 1, Oct. 9. - -We are having hot and dry weath_ - now. iKvery bit of vegetation is drying up. Gardens are about done. Turnips are a failure. Irish potatoes will be about a half crop. Cotton is opening unmatured and very fast. We are getting nothing sowed in the way of grain, grass and clover. It is getting very late now for crimson clover, especially. Alfalfa is not up and won't come up until it rains. Sorghum making is in progress but it seems the crop of cane is very short and there won't be very much made. The honey tlow this year has been a failure, too. as the bees have gathered very little honey. The October flower is coming into bloom and will probably supply some honey for them. Mr. Edgar Uobinson has been at the Fennell infirmary for several days. He underwent an operation for appendicitis and is doing uicely. Mrs. Robinson spent Sunday with him. Mr. J. C. Reid, of Sardis, N. C., is ?o make a talk at Shiloh Sunday morning on the forward movement. Everybody invited to attend. F. 1). 7, Oct. 0. ?The farmers are very busy now. Cotton has been opening very rapidly and as labor is scarce everyone has had more work than could be accomplished on shedule time. The crop of cotton is good where plenty of fertilizers were used. Some fields are fine and promise a yield of one and one-half bales per acre, while you find much more, especially among the tenants, that will not yield more than 500 pounds seed cotton per acre. The corn crop is short. Mrs. E. fames, who has been in the Fennell infirmary, Rock Hill, for some days, is improving and it is to be hoped that she will soon return to her home. *>ir. i_. \\ . f unaeruui K and family, of Hartsville, were week-end guests of Mr. X. A. Funderburk. Miss Odessa Plyler has returned from Birmingham, Ala., after spending several weeks with her aunt, Mrs. S. M. Funderburk. Rowel 1 and family, of Lancaster, spent Sunday with relatives in this section. The cotton crop and also corn will he very short here this year, and owing to the dry weather there is no garden truck worth mentioning. A few have nice turnips. Joe llird. who has charge of the county road gang, is camping near here and is working our roads. Just now, though, they are in bad shape from so much dust. Our Sunday school was reorganized last Sunday and we hope that the new officers and teachers elected will put new life into it. Among those who are attending the reunion in Atlantii this work from this neighborhood are M. N'. and J. 1j. Johnson. L. N. Crenshaw, J. D. Uaile and J. N. Ilinson. Daniel C. ilinson has returned to the hospital at Fort MePheraon after a thirty-days furlough at home. Ilia condition improved while ho was here. S. I>. The man hunt is in the southwest| ern part of Spartanburg county, near I Keidsville, where reports reaching the j city said a negro answering the description of Turner opened fire on a posse which pressed him closely. It is believed here that Turner's capture is near at hand. Officers are inclined to the opinion that Turner is making his way southward from the point at which tinsearch is now being conducted, to the Charleston Western Carolina railroad where he hopes to catch a I freight train and make his getaway.
