Believed as Late as Thursday
That Traxler Might Hold on
For Month.
Washington, Feb. 9.?The President
today nominated T. H. Pope of >
Greenville to be postmaster at that:
place, vice D. B. Traxler, resigned. I
This announcement came as a big
surprise here today, not that it was

A Laxative Fo)
Good
Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin a Safe
and Efficient Family Remedy.
Every member of the family is
more or less subject to constipation
and every homo should always be
supplied with a dependable remedy
to promptly relieve this condition.
Whenever the bowels become clogged
and the natural process of elimination
thereby disturbed, the entire
system is affected, and readily
subject to attack by disease. Constipation
Is a condition that should
never be neglected.,
Mrs. E. R. Gilbert, of Millboro,
Va., says that Dr. Caldwell's Syrup
Pepsin Is a splendid laxative for children
because they like its pleasant
taste, and it acts so easily and naturally,
without griping or strain, and
she finds it equally effective for the
rest of the family.

been done in order that no injury
might be Incurred by him by being
summarily dismissed, which the
present resignation amounts to.. At1
the same time last night it was stated
that Mr. Pope would be nominated
soon, but from all the circumstances
seen here it was believed and understood
that there would be no change
in the office at Greenville for perhaps J
a month or more. Evidently Mr.
Traxler has been unsuccessful in.
pushing his request either for a con- (
tinuation in office or for an extension
of time for a hearing before the
postmaster general.
Mr. Traxler has been here for several
days looking after his case, and
Mr. Pope is here now.
That this be the last of this interesting
matter is the outlook here
at the present time, in as much as
both the South Carolina senators
have stated that they will support the
nomination of Mr. Popo.
It is believed now that the last

AKK1VES IN NEW YORK
New York, Feb. 8.?The French
Line steamship Kspagne arrived here
today with 167 passengers, including
Americans. She left Bordeaux on
January 26 and passed through the
submarine zone before the new German
naval policy was put into effect.
The officers refused to tell the route
followed or whether any war vessels
were sighted.
TWO COLONEL CANDIDATES.

of Butler, of Cherokee.
Gaffuey, Feb. 7.?Col. A. L. Gaston
of Chester, was in Gaffney yesterday
in the interest of his candidacy
for congress from the Fifth district,
Col. Gaston is affable and of most
engaging personality, but when these
qualities are taken into consideration,
Cherokee has a candidate who
is equally affable and polite and it is
a toss up as to whether he or Col.
Butler is the more handsome.
