LUTHER ELLISON, Editor. i SUBSCRIPTION P ICE: (In Advance 'One Year $1.50 Six Months 75c "Let reverence fo laws be breathed bv every American mother to the lisping babe that prattles on her laD; let It be taught In schools, I 1 seminaries and colleges; let It be written In primers, spelling books and almanacs; let It be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed In legislative halls, and enforced lu courts of Just'ce. And In short. TUESDAY. SEPT. 12. 1910 Many a well dresser has a dirty .*>ack yard. Hang on to life. You'll never get a second grab. o Thanks, we never smfike political ' *igars. Make it an ad instehd. o Don't cuss the country roads. Hunt up the road officials and talk to ' hem instead. The strike was called off. Rut prices, we note, persistently decline to come down. o Home people know a lot but don't uinow how to let other people know "that they know it. o Don't sow too many wild fiat < while young. You ma\ run short of seed when you get old. o The time of all others when we "love you to distraction Is when you ?lig down and whack up. Heard about the latest tiermah * "drive?" It was Sunday afternoon and a dainty ntiss sat by his side. o If the mice of print paper keeps on climbing we'll soon have to be printing this sheet on ten dollar hills. o Young men who are inclined to aead a fast life would best keep in r.he vicinity of a stout hitching post. o Let us coMinue working for adequate library facilities. This is a much needed institution in Lancas <r.er. We know a fellow in this town -who is so irresistibly funny he < loesn't even know it. Hut it isn't YO il. o The man who persistently ifinores improved methods of farming is Mimself eventually ignored by the goddess of fortune. o How much longer will we have to wait ttntil some enterprising man. or set of men. build that long needed flour mill in Lancaster? o A new one has been sprung on an overworked public by a murderer v ho claims that he killed his wife in order to keep her pure. o tou just literally overwhelm us when you pay two years subscription at once. Hut. then, we can survive beautifully if you make it five. We would like to carry a news letter from every community in the county in each issue of our paper. Let tlie correspondents get busy. o Little man, when your ma gives .you a penny to buy candy just go out rand carp one yourself, buy candy wifh it, and salt the other down, you'll be rich some* day. Funny, isn't It? A fellow got peaved and stopped his paper the other day and then rushed right over -and borrowed his neighbor's to see -what we had to say about him. Oenerat Nelson A.' Miles thinks a federation of nations would put an end to war! So do we. But the trouble Is, the kiD*s and emperors and other potentates won't listen to either Miles or us. J . TI COMMI'NITY F A IKS. The community fair is an institution hoary with age and one that has don. I a spendid work in developing agriculture and domestic economy and in , building up a closer feeling of unity I among the people. The community fair, however, is a new idea, and it speaks volumes for la community's progress and public spirit when it undertakes to show to the world what good things it is do-j iug. A month from now a communityj fair, known as the Garvin Township I Fair, will be held at Lebanon, and the people of the county ought to J turn out on the day of th'-t celebra-| tion and show their appro nation of the progressive spirit of the promoterest. In Garvin are splendid men and noble women by the hundred j who are wide awake to every move-J ment in the interest of t.ie schools, the church. Improved farm methods,! and all those things that muko a people happier and better. A community that has as much public spirit as this one 'p bound to make its influence felt beyond the; | borders of the county.?Anderson! Intelligencer. These are our sentiment-- exactly, mother Gleej,. an are wl at we have, continually advocated tc the people; of Lancaster duiiu; the past two] years. We are pleased to announce that five communities will hold such fairs in th|s county this fall, viz: Van W.vck. Antloch, Pleasant Valley, Oakhurst and Flint K' >ge. The Van Wyek premium list will be found in this issue of the .Vows. Flint Ilidge premium list will appear in the next issue. ? 1><> IT IlKFOICK WlXTKIt. Paint up your house, repair the leaks in the roof, put the eaves troughs in proper condition, and make any other repairs necessary. It is your castle, the place where your happiest moments are spent, and a winter of pleasure will be assured if you attend to these things now.l Your wile wants you to do it, wheth-| er she tells you so or not. ("loan out your well and see that I health of your family should be your doors, for it is an uncomfortable job it is in sanitary condition. The fust consideration. And then, too. it saves doctors' bios. l'erhaps you need a walk or two around the house, or leading to the front gate, or to me barn, or elsov here. Muild it. Women should not be cc mpeiled to spend five or ten minutes scraping mud off ol' theiri feet every time they step out of doos. for it is an uncomfortable job in rout winter monlus. Inspect your fences and make necessary repairs. It is more pleasant j to do it now than to freeze your' fingers in the dead 01 winter. You know it from experience. Don't forget your stock. If there are any holes in the sides of your barn, repair them. too. A shivering animal does not think much of its owner, and neither do most peop.e. (tot your ne .?s together and look over the public school. The young people do not understand so well the necessity for proper venti'at on and other sanitary measures. Hut they like comfort and plenty ot 1 fresh air. You did yourself, not so long ago. Get busy on the roads. They need it. and you need the results of bet- 1 ter ones. Just how would you like to he a horse, and strain every muscle in in an endeavor to pull n load through a lot of sticky mud the long and wearisome road to town and ba k? Wouldn't like it. would you? N'o'the'" does the horse. (Jo after the town officials and have that hole in the walk repaired, instead of walking around it every time you pass along the street. If they can't see it of their own aecord it is time they had it pointed out to them. Do It youself. i M a k o 11 n vmir * - ? .... ....... ilium H) KO TO church occasionally this winter. Make up your mind now and live up to the make. It won't hurt the church and it will do you a world of good. Do a lot of other things now that when winter comes you will wish you had done in the summer months. Don't leave anything until tomori row you may he dead and then you will not get the credit of doing things that others leave undon*. If you can't stay on this earth forever, at least leave a record for something behind you. AS THF. F. DI TO It SF.F.S IT. Now that the strike is off. the next thing we hear of will no doubt , be another boost in freight rates. |That will mean more boosts in the reItall price of everything, for It is not I the roada or the dealers that pay thej I ft eight?it is the consumer. If t he I manufacturer ads five per cent to hisi prices, the wholesaler will tack on another ten or perhaps more, and there Is no telling how much more I will he screwed from the public be IE LANCASTER NEW8TUE fore it reaches the consumer. If it ' was simply an increase of the one five per cent or so all along the line i? would not be such a burden. Hut it is not. Every fellow who handles it wants to suck a little extra blood from the turnip, until by the time it reaches your honle or business office the original increase has multiplied many fold. How does it feel to be a goat, anyway? Young man. the road to wealth and fame does not lie through idleness on street corners. Success!ul men are never round there, and men who have made names and fotunes for themselves were not found there in their youth. If some live merchant will spend an hour or two some evening with his store blinds drawn and Install a handsome and attractive window display, something unique and out of the ordinary, and then advertise it in this paper, we venture the prediction that at least half of the peoDle in this community will be around to see it. And many of them will buy just because they happen to be there. Advertising will get the people to a store that is worth going to. but the merchant and his own goods must do the selling. Step up. gentlemen. What merchant in this town wants the people to beat a path to his store? The sting of the honey bee is a jo\ to the sting of price boosting that is going on all over this country. The price of postage stamps and air. however, remain at normal. Do you want to see this town grow? Do you want to see "more money in circulation here? Do you want more of that monej yourself? Then stop kicking and ge' out and push. If you ree a defect.1 help remedy it instead of complaining. I)o something yourself Instead 01 leaving everything for others to do. This town is and always will be Just what we ourselves make it. just as the live wires make them. You can't cultivate corn with a dead horse, and you can't make a live town hv simply telling others what they ought to d . Try it for one day. Give a cheerful word to every one you see from! the time you awake until you go to sleep at night Thnn . ?uie i in- cnange in your own feelings. Whi'n you have road through this issue of the paper just take time enough to let one fact sink into your active brains. The paper on which this issue was printed has cost us! approximately double what it cost us two years ago. The Ink we used is away up in price. The oil that keeps the press revolving is up In price. The power that moves the machinery is sky high. In fact. p every item of expense is up in the h clouds and many are away above them, and every dollar of expense M means just that amount of money " right out of our pocket. A great f many subscribers are in arrears on > subscriptions, and we need that . money in order to meet the rapidly creasing cost of producing this paper. It is simply thoughtlessness!' nn your part, we know, but our owni1' creditors do not recognize that , word. It don't go with them for an instant. l>o we get "ours." broth-' er?
