6 ILL-FATED AUG sm Blaze in Harison Build Threatens Big Augusta, Oa., April 17.?A fir* which broke out at 10:40 o'clock last night in the basement of tinHarison building is now believed tbe under control and the total dam age is estimated to be at about $100.oOft and is said to be partly covered by insurance ? Owing to the difficult position ol lit*1 lire \\ iiiun ut'^tiu in a tuiiiimi iuieui of a basement barber shop and Turkish bath, about half way through tho building, the fire fight ers were heavily handicapped in finding the exact location of the flames. They succeeded, however, in keeping the fire from reach'ng elevator shafts and spreading above the first floor of the building. In the 700 block on 11 road street with the harison building are located many of the principal retail houses of the city, these concerns, together with the professional people w ho were recently burned out in the lire which destroyed more than 30 blocks and since located in the Harison building, were busy for several hours makiug ready to move what could be handled from the district. ,Early this morning one small house on the outskirts of the city was completely destroyed and another badly damaged, it is said, before the firemen could control the blaze. SWAT THE I I.V. Cletnson College, April IS.?By carefully studying the numerous experiments that have been eonueted within the last few years with the house fly. it has been found that this pest is a great disease carrier. We must study its life history hefore we can understand its diseas?rarrying ability. The eggs of the fly are laid 0:1 stable manure and in privies, but Thrive best on horse manure. Kaeh female lays about 12a eggs, of which 75 per cent are females. In ten days after the eggs are laid, the fly is full grown. The house fly carries disease germs on its legs. It does not bite. a> most people think. It is the stable fly tluit. bites. Flies, after rov? ring the little hairs on their legs with numerous disease germs, fly into the house and crawl over the tood that we eat. As they crawl about, the germs drop off their legs, a?d we eat them unknowingly.
