And yet, as a matter of fact never
was there a time when so strong and
so many were the forces for good.

cockroaches, unknown because hidden
by darkness. With darkness
there was also a certain amount of
indifference to cleanliness, such as

With the cutting of new windows
comes light and the vermin are seen
In all their mistiness, scurrying away
before the public knowledge of facing
ft with ignorant bravado according to
their kind. I
And with new knowledge of what |
ills there are has come a widespread
desires to eradicate them. Women
particularly are filled with the new
surroundings in which they live.
There have been many false starts,
of course, many mistakes and much
wasto motion. Many remedies have
been tried and found wanting. But
the forces for good are not dismayed.

and with every gain which is proved
to be a real and lasting one comes a

sightly spots previous to the coming
of summer. Throughout the 1
country aro similar "spring cltvcleaning"
movements are under way,
and in Brooklyn the Tenement
House committee has dafted the following
"clean-up commandments:"

I watch the sunset as I look out
afar over the rim of the blue Pacilic
and there is no mystery beyond the
horizon line, because I know whet
there is over there. I have been
there. I have journeyed in those
lands. Over ther^ where iho sun
is just sinking is Japan. 'Hint star is
rising over China. In that direction
lie the Phillpines. I know all that.
Well, there is another land that I
look toward as I watch the sunset.
I have never seen it. I have never

tain about thin world; my geographical

the forces for good are advancing
with brooms and soapsuds. Churches, i
unions, societies for this and for that ,

clearing and rebuilding. I

Rock Hill Record.
While the agitation of cleaning up
Rock Hill and making it more sanitary
is on, wo want to throw out a
suggestion which, in our mind is the
most important one to begin with.
It has been stated to us, ami very
reliably so, that ther* to some business
houses cn the principal strens
of Rock Hill that are not connected
with the sewer lines. Also residences
on the principal streets of the
city that are not connected with the
sewers. We would suggest that our
city council, board of health and
those pushing the clean-up-sanitation
work that they start on this first. It
will do a great deal of good to go
around and clean up all back yards

main in use in the business part Of
the city and on our thickly settled |
residence streets, so long will we
have millions of Hies and mosquitoes
and plenty of typhoid fever and malaria.
Some will say that there are
only a few cases of this kind which
may be true, but one case may breed
enough flies to give every member of j
that home typhoid fever and all of
their neighbors. What is the sense of
having a sewerage system if people
are allowed to go on using the sur-l
face closet which should have been 1
done away with in a place of this
size twenty years ago.
| Some will say that possibly these
parties are not able to install sew-1
erage equipment. Suppose from the
lack of it a member of the family con-;
tracts fever, the doctor's bill, the
medicine bill, and possibly an undertaker's
bill, will cost more than to
install sewerage, not taking in consideration
the loss of life, which
should be the first in mind. This
is one thing we think should be compulsory
as health is the first and
most important item in life.

of America, for the purpose of securing
a concensus of intelligent nonpartisan
opinion as to the question of
the greatest importance before the
country at the present time it is

The result is not surprising, since
at the time the thinking people of
the world have been brought face to
face with the horrors and follies of
war and they see that, from every
point of view, other quesctions take
on minor significance before an issue
that is world-wide in its interest and
importance to humanity.
The world has not until now seriously
considered this thing of permament
peace within the realms of the
things possible, but the beginning of
the solution of that supreme and
fundamental problem has been begun.
It took this dreadful war to
awaken world conscience to the power
it may wield in this regard, but
the awakening has come. There will

trying to get transportation to some
other town outside the war zone.
