When it is noted that a hen sits on the nest for two or three nights in succession, she is ready to be transferred to a nest, which should be prepared for her beforehand. This nest should be in-a box and composed of straw, hay, or chaff for nesting material. Dust the hen thoroughly with Insect powder each week while sotting. In applying ?he powder bold the hen by the feet, head down, working the powder well into the feathers, giving special attention to regions around the vent and under the wings. The powder should also be sprinkled in the nest. The nest should be in some quiet, out-of-the-way place on tlio farm, where the setting hen will not be disturbed. Move her from the regular laying nest at night. Put a china egg or two in the nest when she is sot and place a board over the opening so that she cannot get off. Toward evening of the second day leave some feed and water and let the hen come orr the nest when she is ready. The war is i having fully as great an Influence on the horse and mule business as on the market for meat animals. Seemingly, therefore, the present time Is most propitious for buying young mules. They may be bought $25 to $.25 lower than usual, and when they are three or four years old there is every reujon to believe thev can be sold for $25 to $50 a head more than in an ordinary year heretofore Growing mules will have a greater value than usual during the next two or three years. In case ownerS want to borrow money on them. In buying mule colts, it is advisable to buy females. The cotton trade pays $15 to $25 a head more for mare mules than for males, because they are better shaped and look more trim. Mare mule colts will cost $5 or $10 a head more than males. Kansas and Missouri are the greatest surplus mule statew. At the present time tt Is possible to buy any reasonable number of weaning mule colts within a radius of 100 miles, or less, of Kansas City, In a comparatively short time. Missouri possesses about 350,000 mules, Kansas something lees than 300,000. Each of the cotton growing states has between 200,000 and 300,000 mules. Texas more than 500,000, but they raise comparatively few mules. Raise All Your Feed. While It mav be better to use some mill feeds during the winter, profitable dairying can be carried on with farm raised feeds alone. The man who haa plenty of alfalfa hay and good corn need not worry about not having the elements of a balanced ration. Fraps. state chemist of Texas: The average composition of cottonseed is as follov.-s: Nitrogen 3.13 per . i cent, phosphoric acid 1.27 per cent, potash 1.17 per cent. Land of this character usually needs vegetable matter more than it does fertilizers. That is to say. it needs applications of stable manure or a rotation of crops in which a legume, such as cowpeas, clover, etc., is grown to be turned under or grazed off. Learn, Oklahoma Agricultural College.) j- There are several diseases which are quite common to the sweet potato in 11113 siaie, uui prouuuiy uie greatest losses are due to the two fungi _ causing the soft rot and the black rot. ~ The two forms cause a very different rot, hence the names of the two diseases. A fungus is a plant which repro- 1 duces by spores which are the same as seeds; but the fungus gets itH food . by sending slender filaments into an- ?t other plant, teriped the host. These filaments are similar to a root of the common plant, which gathers ~ food The soft rot is probably less com- 4 noon and of minor importance, for it causes its trouble on bruised pota- ? toes while in storage. It gains en- ' trance through a bruisod area while black rot docs not necessarily need a bruised surface. The black rot has seemed to be y more common in the vicinity of the agricultural college the past year than for three years. This disease is of N great importance as it is parasitic and causes a rot which may not be no- j ticed in its early stages. It appears I J aa a dark colored sunken area and ! gradually increases in size until this I area Is very large and very much sunken, and by making a cross-section of the potato through such an area one A may easily note the dark, diseased tissue. I \ If the diseased potatoes are used for taking slips from they will In all probability be Infected. The Infection la I ^ noticed as a small, black area. There * may be several such Infections on a slip If the slips are too badly infected the plant may die after being set ? out; or It may not be vigorous in "" growth.
