The Views of .Mr. T. W. Secrest on Recent Event. To the Editor of The News: Permit me to say a few words in behalf of Lancaster county and its j fair. No one knows better than I i what a grand county old Lancasterj is. She is bounded on the north by | North Carolina, east by Lynche's , river or Chesterfield county, south m by Kershaw county, and west by j Catawba river, or Fairfield. Chester and York counties. Her soil is most- j ly red and gray with occasionally; sandy loam, and rolling enough to drain herself without washing, but j little if any. There are many creeks ; and smaller streams emptying into Lyncli's ? or Catawba rivers, said i streams supplied by hundreds of the ! purest springs of water that man I or beast ever drank. Her bottom lands are as rich and fertile for corn and small grain as the eye of man ever viewed, her rolling hills are as productive when planted to any crop as ever a seed was dropped, and especially that king cotton crop, that great commodity that I have so often heard some of our best farmears boast, but alas where Is king cotton now, from which all have fallen so low Hut there is still other chances to which our farmers have caught the idea and that is of sowing small grain and planting corn. I predict there will be more corn harvested in this county next year than has ever been before in her history, and she has the class of farmers who can and will raise the corn. There is no more hard working. industrious and prolific class of farmers than is to be found in Han- j cnster county. In my mind Lancas- ' ter county's first fair settled that i question. It was one of the grandest treats I ever witnessed in every department of it. It will be useless for me to undertake to sav more > than has already been said, except I wish to comment on one oud pan-handle farmers, Mr. J. M. Yoder, proprietor of Oakland farm of Vian Wyck. This farm received many exhibits at Lancaster's first fair. Three 2-year-old colts,fust prczi first display farm winter pardon varieties drst prize. Five varieties corr.. first and seco,:'; 0:1 prolific corn on the stalk, second price on yellow corn, 12 kinds of ono quart samples. Wheat, oats, two ki'ids of rye, two of peanuts, three of field peas, first on rye, second on sweet potatoes, first and second on turnips. There seems to be a group of farmers just north of Lancaster who are up to date as farmers in the person i of Coupsars, the Rohjrts and' the^ Oralgs. Their corn, as well as other exhibts, wero first class, their />orn was quite, If not equal to, that at tho national com exhibt at Columbia two years ago. I have been in number* of poultry shows at state fairs, but I never saw a better solection than this one. And all other departments <-.|iiallv as good. After Quarrel With His Wife Kails into the Kite in Adjoining Koom. Saturday night, John Davis, colored, who lives in a house in rear of Mr. H. S. Harper's machine shops, ! just after a violent quarrel engi ged in with his wife, Sallie Brown, walked into an adjoining room and fell over dead into/ the Are place. Sunday morning ,-there was some suspicion of foul' play on the part, of his wife, in view of the fact that* she had quarreled with her husband and threatened violence to him. So ^laglstrate John L. Caskey, acting as coroner, summoned a jury and KaM ~ ? ? * ?oiu mi mquesi over tne negro. Several witnesses were examined, but there was no evidence that the woman had offered any violence to the man. Dr. R. C. Brown, who *.vas examined as a witness, among other things, testified that in his opinion the man "died of heart disease, brought on by undue excitement and that his neck was dislocated by the fall.". The verdict of the jury of inquest was therefore, that "John Davis came to his death from heart failude, caused from undue exc'tement." The man and his wife came here with the sewerage gang the past summer. Social News The Friday Afternoon Book Club hehl a most delightful session with Mrs. Boroy Springs Friday, December 11th. The elegant Springs mansion was aglow with many tapers and lavishly decorted with holly, while many vases were tilled vith fragrant crimson earn ration. The guests were entertained in the front parlor. The reading, Act II, Scenes 2 and It, Julius Caesar, which followed the interesting current events, was unusually instructive, and the questions on it provoked very animated discussions of the characters, especially of Portia and Calpurnia. After the conclusion of the program at d distribution of books the guests repaired to the dlaiag room. ?here on the lace covered tables with elaborate centerpieces of American Beauty roses, they were served with an elaborate and much enjoyed five course luncheon. The dainty handpainted place cards made lovely souvenirs of this happy occasion, Vihich closed the club season for the year 1914. The next meeting of the club will be held with Mrs. L. C. This work will serve as a demonstration, and we hope will result in better health conditions throughout these counties. It will not be possible for us to do such work in Lancaster county this year. If your new county delegation is interested tn this matter and you can get them to meet in Lancaster some day next week I shall arrange to meet them and discuss plans for the county to employ a county health officer, who will spend his entire time in examination of school children, in the investigation and stamping out of contagious diseases ana in giving illustrated lectures on disease prevention in general This matter is one of the most important and the money thus spent will yield greater returns than money spent for any other purpose.
