Id Spar- * * tan burg Journal. * W| * * Araei ? maga * * ** ******** ** **?*?# for H We have been requested to furnish BnSl some reflections for The Journal. This however. Is not so easy to one who "'u has been out of the editorial chair, I lik< by choice, for twelve or more years, t,lt> ? though willing to do whatever of good is possible to us. as j8 1. That there Is an Empire of Dark point ness in this old world around us can tlsen hardly be questioned. pers This Empire of Darkness is In bit- ?xtra ter opposition to the Kingdom of fairs Light, and seeks the overthrow of To purity, truth and righteousness by years methods born of the deepest moral erve< obliquity. There is no other reason- thinl able ground on which to account for a the moral ills which beset our way, husir and for the iron grasp by which men Rs are held In the chains of darkness, of rs However depraved man may be, he and 1 would not pursue the ruinous courses boug which now mark his goings were he ials, not a captive in irons, driven on by the a a merciless monarch. On every side sons you can see men doing things, and upon following courses of life, which they Hi must know will, in the end, mean Rurel loss of self-respect, loss of manhood Cleoi loss of honor, loss of health and the able blighting of all their prospects In life. tory. It is moral madness?demonical pos- q, session. daily 2. These men deserve our pro- a spI foundest sympathy and our best ef- an',j forts to bring life, light and liberty ' jn to them. Without help outside of fQre themselves, the Intervention of the tainl . power of God and the help of God's COnt< ^ people they can never become free run, men?the slave cannot liberate him- (jnKe lielf. To the gospel, and not to legls- ?at0! lative acts in themselves, are we to sorm look for moral and spiritual redemp- of V tion in community, state and nation. 3. Rut when men regard the church for f as "interfering with their rights and the j antagonistic to their likes and dis- worn likes, what are we to do? There is i . only one line erf action open to ?>,. Appeal mightily to God; arouse the moral consciousness of those who yet cling to God, to the church and to the M ' right, and rigidly enforce the civil law I until men learn wisdom and righteous ness. And yet the outlook Is not hopeless. There are many who have not bowed their knees to Baal; and righteousness truth and love throb In many loyal hearts. We have watched life In general for many years, and life In Bpartanburg some ten or twelve. We aj-e, therefore fully assured that Light Is gaining the mastery over Darkness and sin. Our city Is to be congratu- c lated on the splendid citizenship with In our gates on the bright educational and religious outlook on our business thrift and enterprise; and not least, on the great good being accomplished by the forces of the church of God. The congregations of this city will PI bear comparsion with those of other ^|re< sections, and the spirituality of our people is in the main commendable. Vin< - God still rules anil reigns. last ~ I I THE HAPPY EGOTIST. Pros From The Chicago Record-Herald. I wall I know a man who likes himself so |j0U1 well That he can speak of little else, I indeed; and By self-praise he can cause his chest to swell, ink Though no one else may listen or wou may heed. I fancy that he stands before his glass nnti And marvels at his outward fault- | leftsnesK * No doubt he thinks that people watch him pass Can As 1 he were a good or little less. His speech consists of "I" and "me" ?= uo my ; On what h? does he lavishes loud praise; Me thinks the suu would cease, it he should die, To light and warm the world with wel come rays. , k His voice la sweetegt music to his ears His wisdom he believes to be pro' found; His every bone and sinew he revervoe. And where he stands he think 'tis , holy ground. 8ay that he Is a fool and 'twill be true. For he has little wit, his worth Is . Small, The talents that he has are poor and a few, But may he not be envied, after all? Complacent In his splendid self-concelt, If others scoff he neither knows nor cares; To him life must be gloriously sweet, ' And few the disappointments that he bares. I Wonderful Cough Remedy. Dr. King's New Discovery Is known 1 everywhere as the remedy which will ! surely stop a cough or cold. D.
