It, _ II THE BUFORD MONUMENT. I Sheriff Hunter l-'uriiislics Dcsotlptluii I of TliLs Historic Monument. To the Editor of The News: As ex-Sheriff M. M. Buford of Newberry, S. C., wrote me to send him a copy of the inscription on the Buford monument, which is 10 miles east of Lancaster court house on the Rocky River road, I procured it and forwarded it to that brave old Confederate soldier, who no doubt is a descendant of Col. Abraham Buford. I thought that notwithstanding the Inscription on this monument has several times before been published in the Lancaster newsnaners. the publication of it ugain in The Lancaster News would be interesting to some of your readers. So the following is a true copy of -the inscription on the Buford monument, towlt: "Erected to the memory and In honor of the brave and patriotic American soldiers, who fell in the battle which occurred at this place on the 20th of May, 1780, between Col. Abraham Buford, who commanded a regiment of 350 Virginians, and Colonel Tarleton of the British army, with 350 cavalry and a like number of infantry. Nearly the entire command of Colonel Buford were either killed or wounded. Eighty-four gallant soldiers are buried in 'his grave. They left their homes for the relief of Charleston, l but bearing at Camden of the surA render of that city, were returning. Here their lives were ended in the service of their country. The cruelty j and barbarous massacre committed j on this occas.lon by Tarleton and his command after the surrender of Colonel Buford and his regiment, originated the American war cry, 'Remember Tarleton, No Quarters.' A British historian confesses at this battle the virtue of humanity was totally forgotten." MaJ. W. G. A. Porter tells me this monument was ere.ted by the people of the neighborhood about 1850, and the prime'mover was Mr. Stephen^T. Small, postmaster nearby. The monument was hauled from Camden, a dlstanc.e of 40 miles, by the team of the widow Malialie Porter. She was the mother of our fellow-townsman, Mr. J. Wylle Porter, and Mr. Garret Sims assisted with his team. When the monument was erected an appropriate address was made by the late Capt. B. J. Wltherspoon of Lancaster. This monument has been badly abused by souvenir seekers, and also by some persons who evidently cared nothing for those 84 brave American soldiers buried in that grave. They showed disrespect for God and man; they shot this memorial of the dead. I think it now high time to get Congress to appropriate something towards a better monument than this one and to employ some one to look after and preserve it, as is being done for many monuments throughout our country.
