r Tv 2 URGE MITCHELL TO STAND BY HIS GUNS University President's Friends Ask Him to lteconsider Resignation? Has Much Hetter Job. Columbia Special to Charlotte Observer. April 12.?President Mitchell of South Carolina Untver sity has been offered the presidency of the combined medical colleges of Virginia at Richmond at a salary of $5,000, and unless tne authorities of that institution will realse him from his acceptance, he will leave the state and take the Virginia oOer. V committee left here yesterday afternoon for Richmond, to try to induce the Virginia authorities to release Mr Mitchell from his promise. The fight of the governo** against President Mitchell of the uni\ersit> has attracted state-wide attention. In his inaugural address the governor charged that Dr Mitchell, in endeavoring to divert part of the donation from the Peabodv fund from NViiithrop to the university, amounting to $4 0,000, had agreed that if tlie university were given the donation to use a part of the remainder to tlie education of the negroes of tlie South. The governor said that it the charges were true, 1 Mr Mitchell had no place In the educationul system and ought to be driven out. A legislative investigating com- I rnittee exonerated I)r Mitchell of the charges, but a minority report condemned him. The governor I charged that Dr. Mitchell was "whitewashed" and in a meeting of the board demanded his resignation, the board refusing to grant it Tlie governor made a terrific onslaught on President Mitchell and said that he ought to be made to resign. , The three medical colleges in Richmond. Va.. recently consolidated. offered Mr. Mitchell the presidency at a salary of $6,000 a year. His salary at the university is only $3,000, and he practically accepted the offer. When the matter became known at the university a storm of protest against Dr. Mitchell's resigning went up. The student body in mass meeting adopted ringing resolutions against the acceptance of the Virginia offer called on the trustees to refuse the resignation, requesting the alutnn; and people generally to bring all the pressure they could to bear on Dr. Mitchell to retain the presidency of the university. The faculty yesterday morning unanimously added their protest against the acceptance of the Virginia offer. The chamber of commerce added its voice to the regret. iand in a body attended on President Mitchell and urged his reconsideration of the Virginia matter. Telegrams from all over the state have been pouring in on Dr. Mitchell all day urging him to stay at the university. and steady streams of people have called and added their personal protest against his leaving. After committees and persons had brought all the influence they could to hear. Dr. Mitchell said lie would reconsider, if the Richmond authorities would release him from his acceptance, otherwise he would go. A committee to secure his release left here last night for Richmond. Nothing lias so stirred the state in a long time.
