C., under Act of Congress of March 3, 1879. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE: (In Advance.) One Year $1.50 Six Months 75c FRIDAY, APRIL 11. 1918. Swat early and avoid the rush. And don't forget to bury the old tin can. The raincoat and the overcoat has each had its day but for our part we prefer the day of the straw hat, which has been so long deferred. If the Sunday weather thus ( iar voucnsatea to us will out : continue throughout the year, ' 1913 will oiler the able-bodied ' few excuses for not going to church. ( The Greenville Piedmont 1 ventures the assertion that if 1 President Wilson's message had 1 been as long as one President ' Taft sent in, he would not have been willing to read it himself. If the king can real his message from the throne of Great Britain to the House of Commons, surely a Democratic President may in all propriety , deliver his before the Congress of the United States. Congress and baseball are the absorbing topics of interest just now, but we venture the assertion that there are more readers of the sporting pa pre than of the news of congressional happenings, however important these may be. Another town, Statesville, N. C., has been offered a library or at least Mr. Carnegie has consented to give $10,000 for a building, provided Statesville gives $1,000 annually for its support. An election has been ordered to vote on the proposition. When is Lancaster going to become forward-looking in this respect ? Senator Tillman has become i quite philosophical about his defeat for the chairmanship of the appropriations committee, declaring recently that he believes it was an act of Providence which will give him time to devote to politics in South Carolina. The ways of Providence are strange and past findout, and neither would we question them, but it does seem to us that the senator should still be able to keep busy in Washington and give poor old South Carolina a rest from himself and his politics at least. The Daily Times serves: notice on its readers that it 1 nrnnnses t?? "stir iir? some more fuss" in Florence as soon as it gets out of the "fight" in which it is now engaged. In reference to one of these "lights," that fearless journal says "we are so used to that sort of thing that we do not mind it." The Times Joes not mince matters. Whenever there is an evil which t believes can be remedied it does not hesitate to call public attention to it.
