I" CENTENARY OF DR. SIMS I It is gratifying to note that the day on which the pioneer of gynecology saw the light has been remembered in that severely scientific nation, Germany. The great regard in which men who have accom X IIV, xvA (il UV. H UL'i Wochenschrift in a recent issue published an excellent portrait of Dr. Sims with an appreciative sketch of his life, concluding that "America is entitled jc to honor in the history of opl v erative gynecology. The names \ 5/ of McDowell, Nott, Battey, Emmet, Bozeman, Edebohls and Kelly will be known for all time, but none shines with such luster as the name of Marion l Sims."?The New York Sun. b SIXTY-SECOND CONGRESS ( LOSES Two Appropriation Measures Fail to Get Through. Washington, March 4.?Two of the annual appropriation bills necessary to the maintenance of the federal government failed of passage today, when the 62d Congress wound up its affairs. Senator Eallfi of New Mexico holding the floor through the ' closing hours of the session, talked the Indian appropriation bill to death with its $12,000,000 for the support of the Indian service, while President Taft wrote his veto on the $115,000,000 bill to take care of the "sundry civil expenses" of the government. The house repassed the sundry civil bill over the veto, but wnen it reached the senate, Senator Poindexter objected to i any appropriation for the < Washington police force unless | an investigation had been made of the riotous scenes attending the suffrage parade Monday! . and the senate did not get to a f vote on the bill. More Rich Farmers. Washington.?The "back-tothe-farm" movement has three recent recruits. Vincent Astor's announcement that he will farm may be followed by similar announcements from the Rev. Frederick Taylor Gates, almoner to John I). Rockefeller, who has purchased 25,000 acres of cotton land and corn land in Moore county, North Carolina, and Edgar B. Marston, of the firm of Blair & Co., of New York, who has bought 500 acres adjoining the tract of Mr. Gates. Messrs. Gates and Marston have employed managers and will grow cotton on a large scale. Our republican simplicity has at times revolted at what is euphemisti- ' j cally called hero worship. It is a significant fact, nevertheless, that the achievements of its citizens are the most valuable assets of a country. Regarded even in this unsentimental light the courage and genius of our . Marion Sims in originating an entirely new branch of surgery deserve to be commemorated i and to be held up to the present generation as an example for emulation. J. Marion Sims, a native of Lancaster, S. C., emigrated to i Montgomery, Ala., in order to enlarge his field of practice. There he 4evised a method of surgical procedure for the repair of serious injuries which in that preantiseptic day was made possible only by the substitution of the silver suture for the silk suture. So fruitful was this and other work of Dr. Sims for the welfare of suffering women that his fame spread to Europe, and he was the first American physician consulted by royalty. Those whose happy privilege it was to know this grand man personally were not surprised that he rapidly bejL came the valued adviser of the nobility. In him were discerned all those elements of character which are the attribute of true nobility; simplicity almost childlike, sympathy almost feminine, courtesy without ostentation ; the charming manner, the kindly eye, the cordial handgrasp bespoke a great I soul, as did his diftness betoken I the great surgeon.
