A man tried in many high I offices and critical enter- I ' prises And found faithful in all. . His life was one long sacrifice 40 of interest to conscience And that life on a woeful Sabbath did he yield as a holocaust to his country's need. i Not wholly understood was he while he lived, But in his death his greatness stands confessed. In a people's tears. Resolute, moderate, clear of envy, Yet not wanting in finer am- J bition Which makes men great and pure. In honor, impregnable In simplicity, sublime, No country's e'er had a truer son, no cause a nobler champion, No people a bolder defender, no principle a purer victim Than the dead soldier Who sleeps here. The cause for which he perished is lost, The people for whom he fought are crushed, The hopes in which he trusted are shattered, The flag he loved vjuiues nu more rne cnarging "flt lines, But his fame, Consigned to the keeping of that time Which happily is not so much the tomb of Virtue as its shrine Shall in years to come, fire modest worth to nobler ends. Our School?One Class Vs. Another. The old school bell chimes out ^ "come" and as we look forth and see the groups of boys and girls on their way to school, we note some whose . elastic step and cheerful faces are highly indicative of the soul and mind, ' and all such will prove a blessing to themselves, their teachers and their school. Their actions show their anxiety for work, their lessons will be perfectly prepared; their recitations well given and they will attain to that round on the ladder of fame and learning called success. They will master all knottv nroblemsj nnt r?Yil\r Jr. I I school but in life. They will not require punishing in order to teach them the necessity of getting their lessons. They study because they love to; are industrious and energetic from principle; their life will be a success. | Following comes another group of boys whose lagging steps and sullen faces show that the sound of the bell grated harshly upon their ears. These boys will prove unruly, unkind and, unlike the other class named, will take but little interest in their work, and at the end of the year, in spite of M a teacher's earnest efforts in their behalf, will be but little farther advanced than in the j beginning. We need not say what the re- | | suit will oe in the latter class, | but to these boys' parents we I wish to say, try to cultivate in I their minds a love for the school | and school work. See to it that I they are in school every day; that their report cards show a good grade or know why such is not the case.
