> 8 HAMPTON LITERARY SOCIETY e< The Splendid Entertainment at w School Auditorium last Friday ^ t( Night, the Occasion being the Society's Annual Public Meeting.' ft d The general verdict of the au- vn dience that filled the graded c< school auditorium Friday night ft at the annual public meeting F of the Hampton Literary Society fi was that the entire occasion and Si every feature of it was entitled i w to high praise. I v The Society was called to or-! ir der by the president. James jh Beaty, whose opening address of L welcome was greeted with en- e; ^ thusiastic applause that was n ' fully deserved by his appropriate n remarks delivered clearly and j A forcefully. He presided through-1 a out with credit to himself and e to the Society. p The participants in the decla- o mation contest for the g?ld "medal given by Mr. John T. Green, p were Roddey Bell. Elbe Hath- \ cock, Frank Green, Evelyn Sow-Jg ell, Lawson Elliott. Frances c Massey. It is no idle remark to J say that they all did well, and1 s particularly noticeable was the! a fact that they were easily heard n in all parts of the auditorium. 1 F This medal will be given annual- J ly by Mr. Green. : f; The judges of the contest were l Prof. .j. A. Stoddard, of Heath w Springs, Prof. R. N. Nisl>et of Wax haw. and Mr. O. (\ (Vox ton r. of Lancaster. The contestants IV were unknown to the judges ex- <> cept by numbers. The medal a was presented to the winner, (; Frank Green, by Prof. Stoddard, b who made an excellent speech of fi presentation and in particular t< impressed the fact . that he b was presenting the medal to 0 a young man whose name was is unknown to him. The decision (' of the judges was unanimous, w ? . though they gave special men- f5 tion to Miss Effie Hathcock and ty. Roddey Bell. a. The subject for the debate was a< "Resolved, that the United States n Government should own and con- b trol the railroads." Mr. John h Reed Boldridge and Miss Kate ei Mines spoke for the affirmative, and Mr. Cantson Moore and Miss jt Esther Byrd for the negative. T The papers were well prepared e: and were all good, and a special n feature was that they were spoken openly and not merely read from manuscript. The judges were Mr. W. T. Gregory, Mr. m a. ,j. uiark and Dr. J. D. Fun- J \ derburk, and their decision was:' for the negative. The stage was beautifully decorated. and this together with, the numerous excellent pictures] which have been placed in the; auditorium, made the place very i attractive. Miss Inez McCaniell. Secretary of the Society, an ( nounced the program, which in addition to its other good tea- 1 tures, was not so long as to he J tedious. Every one present was: o enthusiastic regarding the ex-' T cellence of the meeting, and the j^, order and quiet was a subject of' w general comment and praise j jl The first feature of the pro gramme was a reading by Miss Leila Harper, which was much i enjoyed. The music by Misses Nannie Hill Moore, Bleeka Hinson, Eliza Wylie, Jessie Lee Blackmon. and Marie Roddey, 1 was of distinctively high order 0 and reflected credit on all concerned. The ovation of the evening was given to the quartette composed of Messrs. James Beaty, Will Plyler. Eugene Elliott, and T Kf.ii r/i _ .vianey rerguson. i ney were | * forced by prolonged applause to to respond to three encores. Mr. S. J. Vincent, of the 11 Heath Springs section, and his * son, Mr. J. W. Vincent, of Barn-' p well, were in town yesterday. ti Messrs J. M. Hood and A. 1. ' Gregory returned Sunday from ,, JSt. Louis, where they bought a i nice lot of horses and mules. 1 \ To joo have that <lt?rk brown taete in vonr mouth every morning when yon wake? s If so, yon are bilious <in.l should t. ke two d or throe of tboao little HLOODINE LIYKK PILI.tS, eaey to take, never atrken. weaken or gripe.
