tv ' , j|r.v 2 Agricultural | ^ Department The JPirst Essential of Successful Stock Raising. It the advantages ot live stock husbandry, as pictured in thel agricultural press, by farmers' inetitu'e lecturers and by agricultural feathers generally, had been realized by those who have attempted to engage in the business throughout the South, there would now be no necessity I or advocating the growing of more live stock. While we are convinced that tfie teaching regarding the value of live stock husbandry has iu the main been correct, it nevertheless remains a stubborn fact that Southern farmeis, and others among us who have had "experience,'' have not found the business generally profitable. Probably 95 out of every 100 who have engaged in some one of the various lines of stock rais, iug, on a more or less extensive scale, will testify to their firm conviction that there is more money in cotlou. Tills failure of the general experience of our people to support facts established and iienerally accepted when applied to other (arming sections, must have some satisfactory explanation. That is, (here must be some good reason why live stock husbandry has not been found generally profitable throughout the South and consequently has not made that progressive development which generally accompanies improved agricultural conditions. The excuse generally given by those who have not made the bu-i nessprofitable is, vers naturally. that clim Hie, soil, and o'her conditions are unfavor tblo to the industry; but thai ibis conclusion is untenable, therei- ample pro d in the success oi individuals here and there throughout the whole South, who have made practically all the different lines ot stock raising proli able. It is but natural that tlmse who noi made the busness profi able should lay the blame on the climate, soil, or some o'her con iition over which man has no con fcrol, rather than on thm-elve*; bu* in view ol the fact thai some have succeeded, we are probably justified in concluding that the trouble has been with (lie rnui With the coining of llie b'dl weevil there is addiiional reason for the introduction of more live stock husbandry into our agriculture, and thosejwlio are (in incially able are going to inve-i and lose much money in live -t ? !< during the next few year* unless tluy depart Irom lie pme'icts ml the past. No profit i- made (he owner until th? body demands of the animal are supplied, and if barely enough feed for these are furnished, not only is there no profit, buf instead, the complete Iosh of that feed which is pi veil is the inevitable result. Tue first step in preparing for live 6tock husbandry is to prepare for the growing of feed lor live sloe's. The chief it not the oi.ly true purpose of live stock, on the farm, apart from the work stock is to consume feed aud convert it into products of equalor greater value and leave on the farm a large share of the plant foods used in the producti uon 01 inosiocKieea n tins oe the case, the more raw product, feed, consumed the more finished product made and the more fully has the animal fulfilled its true mission. Anyone who contemplates materially increasing his live stock, six months or a year hence, should begin at once to provide real pastures and an abundance of feed for such live stock. While our errors are many as respects the selection and balancing feeds, our cliiefest of sins is in not providing a sufficient quantity. Owing to the fact that we do not produce ?uf| ticient feed stuffs for local use, the price of feeds is high and we are not likely to find pre tit in feeding what we produce unless it is ted under the most favorable conditions. Ilence, the necessity tor a good quality of stock well feed, but remember always that the lirst and most important phase of live stock growing on the farm, is the production ol feeding stuff s. There is no wifulom in getting an expensive machine unless we are certain we can supply an abundance of the raw materials necessary to successfully run the machine. No Southern man has any use for live stock unless he expects, nay, is certain, he can supply an abundance of leed produced on his own tarm at 1 he least cost practicable More feod first and then more live stock!?Progressive banner. | l ived 15* Years Win.
