fBANK ASSESSMENTS. y Governor May Remove Coun ty Boards of Assessors That Have Failed to Carry j Out Instructions. Columbia Record : Comp-i troller General Jones said toda.v j that mauy of the county ; icg boards over the State have wholly failed to carry out the recent instructions sent to them by the governor and the comptroller general as to assessments of banks, tbeirs reports to the comptroller geueral showing that eutirely unwarranted deductions are made in favor of banks, in the face ot the very explicit and emphatic instructions from Co-' lumbia. United States bonds,) and even investments in co'ton mill stocks and muuicipal and county bonds and school bonds are exempted. One bank with $100,000 capital and nearly $50,900 surplus make9 return for taxation of only $2,500. The comptroller general will report these cases to the governor and request him to remove ?he county boards which have refused to carrv out the law . The county boards are made up from the chairmen of t,he township boards, which are all appointed by the governor, and euoject to removal lor cause. Their removal by the governor would create a profound sensation in a political way, but tjiovernor Ansel is a man who doesj not allow politics to interfere, with duty, and a big, sweeping WA out of members of county asj | sessing boards would not create ' | great surpiise in the oircum| stances.
