Agricultural J* ^ Department "Arc You a Farmer, or Merely a Contractor?" Why is It that the Corn and the Meat that are to Supply Your Farm Can Not be Grown Upon it as Cheaply as Upon Some One Else's Farm? I (Tin* Southern < ulti valor.? Evorv now and then, a thought ii flashed from some brain bearing the stamp both of originality and completeness so that it becomes curreul irom thence on. Just as the government puts the official stamp upon a gold dollar and semis it lorta to pass current among all maukiud; so these minds stamp the impress of their thought tnto certain words and s^nd the idea forth to pass as meutal currency for ull time. AH times oi unrest aud crucial times, cause men to think more deeply, and some minds coin tiiese expressions that afterwards become household words. The struggle of the Southern farmers to get a higher price tor their cotton, has teen such a "crucial time," and the tact that we did uot get 15 cents for our cotton, does uot make our cause wholly lost The caus.ng ol the groat masses of our farmers to think more deeply than usual, goes far to compensate us foi our lailure as to price. We published two such thoughts under our heading of "Timely Suggestions" in our last issue. They are too good to lose. They will bear repetition. They ate a distinct gain to the j realm of Southern agricultural; thought No man can put these two ideas more clearly and forcibly than their authors put them. One came from a Tennessee larmer. one from a Georgia farmer. Our Georgia farmer. J. II. Johnston, ol Newborn, (l i., says : ''I was a contractor once; I contracted With thfr? Jinorrti in I In grow- cotton?lor supplies?1 was to {trow the cotton for the corn, meat, meal and llour I hat lie furnished me during the season. ' 1 lost out and now 1 am changing my method^. 1 am quilting I the contracting business and gone ' lo farming." Ihe question ;s 1 for us all?are we contractors or I tanners? How much ol the con- ' trading business enters into our! ' system? Can we change our 16 mode to a better system <>l farin-j1 ing? Whether you are richer1 poor, landlord or tenant, tins is c now a pertinent question tor us c all- The great unrest among our I fanners, shows conclusively that * s (nothing is wrong. We have < been told bv our would-be lead- ^ ers, that the fault was in Wall 9 street, in our banking system? * in our government; in ihe Kng- j1 lish spinners' greed. and a nidusand outward places, but (he truth!1 is that the chief fault lay at our * own door: it is in our lack of a s Irne-self-'- tistaini'iir. diversified : 0 system of farming. Then come Mr. \V. JO. Jenkins % from Tennessee, and says: 4 A11 your foodstuff must be urowu on somebody's farm ; it is presuma. ble thai it can be most cheaply il grown upon your own."
