^F F Agricultural 1. % Department Does the "Williamson Plan of Corn Growing Pay? mi r% ? Jiae l'rogresHive banner. The Pregressive Farmer has been accu&ed of fighting the Williamson Plan. Thin charge is Q(>t true. We have never fought it; we have simply refused to take it on faith. We have merely asked (or proof. As the slang v phrase has it: "We are from Missouri : show us. We are ready to he convinced whichever way the (acts point" "Try out the Williamsou Plan aide by side with other plane and if actual field tests show that the Williamson Plan is best, let's jf everybody farm by the Williamson Method. If on the other hand, actual tests show that the same amount of fertilizers, if applied with some other plan would make more corn, why let's follow the method that pays best." This has been our advice irom the very first, and it is still our v ** policy. The Williamson Plau, it will be remembered, calls not only for certain radical changes in cultural methods, neglect or "stunting" of plants in early stages of growth, etc., but also for from three times to five times as much fertilizers as farmers ordinarily use under corn. * Now with such a great increase in fertilizers used, of course the Williamson Plan is going to make more corn?very much more corn ?thau the old method. If it did not, farmers would have to go into bankruptcy to pay the fertilizer bills alone. But the question is, Would not the same amount of fertilizer make as much or corn if cultivated by ordinary methods instead of the Williamson \lelhod? The only possible way to ans-; wer this question is not by opin ion or theory or quarrel bu' aimplv by making; accurate side j by-side corn-field tests. It is I this kind of tests we have been pleading for all the time, and we are always anxious to publish the results just as soon as! we come across them, whether they are iu favor ot the Williamson Idea or against, it. Here is the result of every ! side-by-side test that has yet come to our attention, and the' reader may draw his own con elusions as to what policy lie1 should follow. -1 i! The first such test we heard I Of was made by Mr. J. C. Strib > ^ ling, Pendleton,S. C. Mr. Stribling is one ot the best farmers in the State, and his trial showed a loss ot six bushels p^r acre by lollowine the Williamson Plan as compared with the same * amount ot fertilizer an I the ordinary plan of cultivation. t II. ; Next came the Alabama Sih-,1 tiou tests tor lltOH. Result : I One bushel more per aere by Williamson Pian. 1 III,. i Then came the Sou'h Car* linn Experiment Station ie-t- ,1 for 1^07. the most exhaus:ive, searching and throughgoiug ever made, the results beinu at> follows : (1) In a test of nineteen difl- , erent plots under all sorts of conditions and experiments, the average yield per acre on Wil1 l?l?? i or UEtumuu i imu pn/im > ?.? + ?w bushels leas than on other plots. (3) A test was made using j 400 pounds of fertilizer with ordinary cultivation and 1,425 pounds with the Williamson Plan. The result here was that f the increased yield by extra fertilizer was only G.B3 bushels acre?255 per cent increase in fertilizer expense and only 37.5 per cent increase in corn yield. (4) Going further, a test was made on another kind ot land ? a worn-out field. Using no lor ?:i: 1.1 > i. ? tilizui in eiiaiur ;?ecf ui? uiui* nary pi an made one-fifth bushel more than the Williamson Plan; using 900 pounds of fertiliser in each case, the ordinary plan ^ made 4.5 bushel more per acre t than the Williamson Plan. t iv. t Next in order to be absolutely j fair let us give the Charleston f Station tests, 1907. Here the ex- a periments were not properly made , tor comparison, as the William- E son Plan bad 11,024 stalks per t acre and the ordinary plan 2,- ( 450. i'he results showed that it 8 took 158 Williamson stalks to t make a bushel and only 61 I ordinary stalks to make a bushel, c but the corn beinp so thinly t planted on the ordinary plot ^ caused the yield to be twenty- t nine bushels greater for Williamson Plan. r. V. I Fifthly we have Ihe Alabama | ( Stadou ttsfs, 1007, conceminpo which Director Duppar writes as I follows: "The Williamson l'lauit in Us | ure auu original form made i much smaller yield liiHiiih was made throuph an equal *p t plicafion of fertilizer by the 1 common method.
