New York, March 30.?W?ik Hampton, one ot the Inline'to state's most honored and illu^* C trious sons, had his praises as h I soldier and statesman hichlv \ suug at the Waldorf Astoria last ! night. The occasion, which waa notable one, was the annu<l celebration by the Sooth Carolina society ot New York of the birthday of Wade Hampton The principal speaker was Unit, ?d States Senator K D. Smith ot Couth Carolina, the subject o i, bis address being ''South Caro- * lina, South Carolinians, and Wade Hampton the Type." \ Senator Smith bestowed the * highest praise upon the part ; which Wade Uampton had play- ! ed in the history of South Caro- J lina, both in time ot peace and war.
