More About Hydrophobia
Among Cattle in Kershaw
County.
The Columbia State: Mr. R
B. Williums, ex-sheriff ot Ker
shaw county, while here yesterday
related tin account ot a distressing
epidemic of hydrophobia
in a seciion of the county about
seven milts southwest of Camden.
A female bull-do?, belonging
to Mr. James Team, a prosperous
farmer, developed a case
of rabies and bit a number of
cows in Mr. Team's pasture,
where there were 50 cows at, the
time.
The condition of the *? was
not known at the time when
it was discovered that the animal
had an unmistakable case of
rabies, it was killed. But a
number of fine cows had been
bitten aud several of them have
since displayed evidence of the
same terrible malady. The dog
in its lruutic condition, had run
down the river about two miles
to the place of Mr. Henry iSavage
and there bit several cows. Some
of these have displayed signs of
rabies and have been killed. All
of this happened between 4 p.
m. and sundown one afternoon.
The dog which caused all of
this disturbance was what is
known as a "cow dog," and had
been trained to herd cattle just
ab a shepherd dog watches sheep.
Never had it displayed signs of
ill will toward cattle, anil its
conduct a few days ago excited
suspicion. It was very surly
and snapoed at the cattle. On
the day the dog ran amuck it
wa6 seen to bite several ot Mr.
Team's cattle and then run
away.
No persons were bitten, but
several (logo came within the
range of the rabies inlected beast,
and some of these were bitten.
One dog at Mr. Team's house, a
small feoist, was actually killed
by the iniuriated animal. Mrs
Team fired at the maddened dog
fire times with a revolver, but it
relused to let go until lite was
extinct in its victim, when it released
its venomed fangs from
the quivering flesh.
Mr. Team had 50 cuws in the
pasture at the time, and there is
Much anxiety as to what will
become ol them. Mr. Williams
yesterday saw two ot ihem
killed, making seven up to this
time. Mr. Savage has killed
five. Most of these are milch
cattle, valued at $50 each, and
the loss is very heavy.
Mr. Williams saw a yearling
bull affected with the rabies.
The first symptoms were slobberiug
at the mouth and refusal
to drink water. This salivated
condition was followed by a
period of fretfulness, when the
affected animal would not actnullv

any other animals coming around
it. Finally came the period ol
rampant wildness, and in the
case of this yearling it attacked
with impunity a ferocious hull
which had been the terror of tin
plantation.

said the meeting would be
the most importaut conference of
cotton men ever held.
Mr. Jordan said that it was indeed
fit'.ing that it bhould be;
assembled in this the largest interior
cotton market in the
world.
"We have assembled" he continued,
''to safeguard and pro.
tect the great staple crop of the
South from t he artificial pud depressing
influence of federated
i interests which operate to the
i deirimeut oi every business interest
in this section of America.
We lace a serious condition and
whether we will arise equal to
the emergency and protect our
interests as men of brain and business
sagacity or indifferently
accept the situation and parade
before the world our voluntary
weakness; is the issue which pre
sents ilsell to this convention.
Mr. Jordan said that raw cotton
is the only great staple com
modify in the world today which
is selling below the cost ot production,
notwithstanding the fact
that it presents one of the world's
greatest necessities.
' That this great staple should
ever sell at a price to the cotton
growers of ies-1 than 10 cents per
pound in a reflection upon the
manhood and intelligence of the
Southern people
"If the cotton growers, bankers,
merchants and allied buain
-88 interests ot the South will
determine that the price of spot!
cotton must and shall go back
to 10 cents before the mouth off
November passes, that price will
be protected, the financial future
of the South will be saved and
not a 9pindle in the world will
be injured."
Mr. Jordan condemned "night
riding" and urged that tbe convention
give its attention to the
boll weevil menace. lie also recommended
the formation of a
chain of warehouses wherelrom
receipts could be issued which

Mr. Ed tor : Wiil jou kindly
allow us space 111 your valuable

school will open next Monday,
the 16th inst., with Miss Alice

requested to state that on last
Saturday there whs a party ot
bird hunters in < ur community,
notwithstanding the rigid law
against shooting birds. Thev
not only violated the law bul
were trespassing on lands that
are posted. They hunted the
eutire day, and one would have
thought that, there was a srkim

reminded us of the shooting that
may be heard on Thanksgiving
day. We think that they wert
very bold, knowing that the>
