2 Agricultural ^ Department Subsoiling Did it. J?. J. ItucliAimn in Southern Kurnlist. Can we farmers betler our land and our crops by knowing oxactly how and when to plow; Ffotn actual experience 1 answei in the affirmative. I' iq an admilted fact that more farmers know how to plow than u-e their knowledge. The general saving is : "I would <iv> so and so. it I had time." I have spar id no tim1 or expense in trying tosnlve the plowing problem, and 1 find a great deal to interest me in plowing and watching the results. 1 find that the same Kind o? plowing does no' suit ali Kinds of 1 md. In hopes it mav benetitsome one 1 will give my experience in plowing lor the last five years. 1 had a ten-acre plot of upland that did not product* as I thought it should. This plot was of a clayey nature, with a red clay sub-soil, and was very bad to pnclt. At times it became so hard that it was quite difficult to cultivate. In the fall ol 11)03 I pu' it to wheat, sowing the wheat bv hand and plowing it in with a cultivator. At haivesting time I found that 1 had only six anil a halt bushels per acre. I; was then sown t?> peas which did no1 reach a ton o! hay per acre. The following spring it wnj put to corn with no belter results, only thirie. n bushels per acre. It was then 1 decided to do som thing. Here i- what 1 did: I took two good mules and put them to a number twentv ' Olivet ('hilled*'turner, and pu' three pood mules to an ol i fashioned t vventv-lour inch Coltar. We started turning the soil about live inches, then put the colter in the furrow as deep as three mules could null. The land was nearly level. Alter we had it all plowed this way. but about an acre?winch was as fertile as any ot ihe Held ? 1 had the colter stopped and finished turning without eubsoilinp. In the mean time 1 posted this one acre so if there was any difference I could note the same From then on the wboie plot was treated exactly alike - aJ r-onn as wo finished we ran a smoothing harrow over it and put it to wheat the second week in October, and used a disc harrow in putting i' in. In the rprii'g one could see no difference in the pari that was broke deep an : the other, but it wasnot long un'il you c ul I.
