4 Ibe%-nntMitx (SEMI-WEEKLY.) 1 ( N4'n:ll DAY, NOV. r, lOON. Though beat out ot our boots we still have Thanksgiving D<tv and Christmas left. There are more UI told you so" liars in the land just now than Carter had oats. Tab parts his hair in the middle, but there was no middle ground about ltie vote he got. Tab's stupendous weight ? about 350 pounds?doesn't seem to iuterlere with his runnin' some. ? Wonder how many merchants will think to have their sidewalks swept of! tonight at the closing hour. i It is geuerally conceded that Taft is better than his party, which is at least some consola 4jon to defeated democracy. Wonder what t hat Texas editor is going to do with the money he raised by subscription belore the election to buy powder and fireworks for a local celebration of "Bryan's victory." Those who expected cotton to advance in price in case of Taft's election were doomed to disappointment. The market and its manipulators didn't seem to cars a continental which "Bill" was chosen lo holil down Teddy's J seat for the next four years. 1 ( Many newspapers are devot- 1 ing much time and space to the 1 exploitation of theories as to the v cause or causes of Bryan's overwhelming defeat. What's the usef In the absence of any pos-j I itive knowledge on the subject j one man's opinion is about asi* good as another's. The only,1 thing certain is that Taft got a v big majority of the votes cast, * but as to how many voters were 1 influenced by money considerations, by coercion, by the buga- ^ boo about the election of Bryan menacing business interests, and ^ so on and so on, will probably never be known. w u Is it possible that Rock Hill isn't a city after ail-not even a F town, a village, a hamlet?just a "place" way out in the country, "tar from the madding crowd:"' Doubt on the subject has arisen since seeing in Wednesday's lo issue of the Herald, of that j1} "place," a wondeiful "possum re tale. ill which a nrnminont I ? -, - r ??vvr e:s Hillian is quoted an saying that w it is useless to utramp through (jj he woods" for 'possum, since V( "they are plentiful in town"? iir so plentiful, i; appears Irom our |[ esteemed contemporary's marve lou? tale, that oneof the animals (} was caught by a clerk in a "big (j store" a few days ago, where it cl had evident I v abided for some a{ lime. It was' only in July last that actual] work was begun under the pros-\ ent system, but good progress! has been made thue lar, as we are informed by those in a position to know. 1 iie authority for the county's new road working plan is contained in a special act ol the Legislature passed at its last ses 3ion?in Feb. 1908.
