Vv Sjjv . i / I Brooks' Forthcoming History of Butler and His Cavalry ?-Letter from Another Gallant Lancaster Veteran (From the Columbia State.) xjt&ueasier, U., July 14. 1908. Col. U. R. Brooks, Columbia, S. 0. My Dear Colonel : I do greatly enjoy your sketches iu the Suuday State, and have traveled with you again oyer the campaign of 1864 with its varied memories. 1 am glad that you have undertaken this work because you participated in makiug the history that you are writ ing and know that it,is true; though, I agree with you entirely that one .person could not see it all, who was a participant in the field, and could or<lv see what was taking place around him. 1 hone th?r? ?r? aiill laf* enough of assistants to get the correct data for your historical sketches. In your description of that "feeling" skirmish at Cold Ilarbor on the 30th of May, I think you said there was some confusion about the order of retreat, which there was, and 1 think 1 can give some intorination on that point and 6how (if it were ueeded) the character of our general as a cool and fearless leader of men. As I was about the last to get back to our lead horses, when I got there and got mounted, my bugler, who was my horseholder, told me that the regiment had gone; that Col. Stokes had gone and unless we started right away we would not be able to overtake them. But 1 as 1 saw Gen. Butler on the field some 50 yards distant, I told my bugler 110, we bad better wait and see if Butler needed us. Shortly after this Gen. Butler beckoned me to come to him, when he told me to take my men (some 15 or 20) and the other scattered trjoops that were there, throw them into column i of fours facing toward the field we had just left, and to let the rear of the column be covered by the woods just in our rear. I did so and had not more than < got to head oi the column and taken my plact before we heard the Yankees coming at the trot, or half gallop, their sabres and iron stirrups making a consiaer- < able clanking, from which I guessed there was about a brigade of them. Gen. Butler sat : there in 20 or 30 paces of us, perfectly cool, aud when the Yankee brigade had cleared the woods in front of us, by about two files iu column of fours, gave the order "draw saber," and afterwards, "show them the steel." The order was promptly obeyed and we heard in the charging brigade the orders, "Halt I lialt I" which were also promptly obeyed and with our general at our head, sabre in hand, we sat there and dared them until they headed column to the rear ami moved out of our sight, leaving us to retire in good order at will, back to the main body of our troops at old Cold Harbor. When the memorable stain pede took, place just about dark the same evening Col. Itutlodge, with the remainder of the regiment. that had not gone with Col. Stokes, were about to go into bivouac in the old held at the cross roads.
