11WK^a^^e|,e lite gpatwaster pews (SEMI-WEEKLY.) WEDNESDAY, A1TO. ID, 19AS. If "Old Sol" didn't throw wide open all of his heat valves Saturday and Monday, he "most". A candidate, whether elected or defeated, has the satisfaction of knowing after the race is over something he never knew before, and that is. who his real friends are. . Judge Fred Moore, of the North Caroliua Superior court, died at Asheville Friday niaht,' of typhoid fever. The vacancy j on the bench thus caused was tendered Mr. Locke Craig by Gov. Glenn, but declined by him. Two prominent citi zens of South Carolina who entered the race for the legislature in their respective counties have withdrawn, former Congressman Stanyarne Wilson, of Spartan burg, and former Railroad Commissioner J. C. Wilborn, of York. It is intimated that Mr. Wilborn i 1 1 Ka nnn/Ii/I r f a f rv * tvatravn ai> yy iti ukd v/auuiuaiu iui uui two years hence. We are indebted to Editor J. B. Slierrill, of Concord, N. C., secretary of the North Caroliua Press Association, for a handsome copy of the proceedings of the association's meeting in Charlotte some weeks ago. A number of exceptionally able and interesting papers are contained in the report. The talented Tar Heel editors seem to be well informed on every subject except the place of Andy Jackson's nativity. A male member of the party of ladies and gentlemen that left Lancaster last Wednesday for New York, going by way of Charleston, where thev took steamer, telegraphed here Saturday afternoon that they reached their destination safely on Tuesday?in other words, they arrived iu New York a day before they departed from Lancaster! That's traveling some, isn't it? Possibly the gentlemen lost no time in taking a schooner after leaving the steamer. The News appreciates the many compliments that have been paid it on its enterprise in securing and publishing last Saturday a full report?about nine columns in small type? )f the speeches of the county candidates, which was done without using anv of the regular space ol the paper, two extra pages being issued. The News is proud of the manner in which it has handled the three Campaigns this year, the Senatorial, Slate and County. The j record thus made far eclipses any j previous journalistic achieve j ment in this section of the ! State. Of course the re markabl record will not be broken this year, ior Bryan and Kern are going to be elected. The New York journal says possibly Bry ail ib a "trifle superstitions"? that he was determined to have for a running mate a man whose name ends with n. His prelerence was Johnson, but he was satisfied with Kern " It's a safe bet that the New York man who ate fifty ears of corn the other day hasn't indulged in a horse-laugh since. , Harry Thaw may be crazy, , but he has enough sense to know ^a lawyer's bill for an unconscion able fee when he sees it. "Can Taft carry Virginia?" asks the Baltimore American. If size counts for anything, he's big enough to carry Miss Virginia and her mother too. Going to moving picture shows, playing checkers and lassoing mosquitoes are said to be the chiei sources of amusement over in Rock Hill these hot summer evenings. Unregistered voters are again rominrtttrl nf t.ho faph f Vi n t t.l-ia registration books will close Sept. 1. Old certificates are now valueless?don't forget that. Mr. Voter, is your name on the poll list of your precinct club? If uot, you had better have it placed there at once, if you expect to vote in the primary on the 25th instant. Tomorrow, 20th instant, is the last day for enrollment. | Taft was thrown from a horse some days ago. But the fall was nothing compared to the one he'll get from the Republican elephaut election day in 1 f OUI UUL * The Winnsboro News and Herald, one of our most valued exchanges, has not visited this office in two weeks or more. What's the matter with Editor Fooshe? Has he closed up shop and gone to the mountains? The Senatorial and State campaigns close this week?Saturday?the former at St. Matthews and the latter at Laurens. Have they proven to be campaigns of education? The answer will be given at the polls next Tues day. j i We are in receipt of a pros- < pectus of Coker College tor Wo- , men, at Hartsville, which is ' the successor of the Welsh Neck s liigb School. I am making my ctin|iaii;n not on promises as to what I will do, but on what I have done. Those who have had business with the Railroad Commission will testify that I have ever been ready to discharge the duties of my office fearlessly, impartially and to the best interests of the people of South Carolina, and that I have always been courteous to those lesiring information and relief. I am the only Railroad Commissioner who has moved to Columbia to be in laily touch with the work of the office. During my term of office I have inipected personally every line of railroad n the State, often walking cross-ties hat I might be assured that tin* eondiion of the road-beds and trestles were safe. I have been often in every county in Smtli Carolina, looking into the condi ions of tht> stations, and improving the onvenienees of tim traveling public. I have stood for lower freight and assenger rates, better schedules, and afer modes of travel. The handsome majority you gave me brmerly has always been appreciated, md has been an incentive to a faithful ?erformanee of my dtities.
