Matters of Interest. Mr. Editor: This hot weather is gettiug next to people but your scribe will attempt to send you a little news. He will ask your readers not to expect much for 'tis too hot to write much. Many Columbiaus have gone off for the summer or for part of the "heated term", but there are still many in the city. The cars, places of amusements, ice cream parlors and the like^are well patronized. The men are talking politics. As to politics there are many varied opinions. Just who will be Junior Senator Iis a matter of doubt. No two men can agree ou who will be in second race or who will out in the second ballot. The gubernatorial race is also causing comment. Few doubt that Gov. Ansel will be reelected, ^ut there are differences of opinion about the majority which "Brother Crafford-' will get. Then the Blease-Ansel, Bleasenewspaper, Blease-preacber and other episodes are causing interest and comment. Thew other state officers are causing more or less speculations. The- county campaign .is also creating'interest. Possibly, the widest discussed part of this campaign is the announcement of John T. Duncan for Clerk of Court. A thief entered a home sometime before daylight Saturday morning in Shandon, one of Columbians beautiful suburbs. The bouse was 'occupied by S. M. Kennedy, a motorman ? of the street car company. When Mr. Keunedy went out on the front piazza next morning be found an axe lying there. The gentleman was very glad that^he did not awake for the thief evidently took the axe to use with deadly intent. His pants were also out on the piazza and had been rifled, C . On Raturilav niirlif ' ?" ^ -/ muumoi robberies occurred, ope at the home of Mr. F. H.t-Gilmore at 1206 lieic^t Street. Mrt QiU more also found his pants on the piazza and that they had been rifled. A watoh was also takep from his vest pocket. He was relieved of #8.10. There were tracks which showed that the thief was barefooted and | wore about nO. 11 shoe. On the same night another robbery committed, at Mrs, Walker's, No. 2404 Gerviaa St., who lives next to. Mr! Gilmore. He look some clothing into the yard. He lett a clue and Col umDia's alert and efficient police will no doubt soon have him apprehended or there will be hard work at any rate to get the ugent".
