ISThy a Farmer Paid J Fabulous
Price for Ear of Corn
Raised by Himself.
Columbia State: Last week
we had a paragraph referring to
a tainous ear of cornfl Thi>
fat ttud whole kbi ?*h.i growu in
Indiana, but it could just. a? well
have been grown in South Carolina;
so that, it Sears tor us jnst
as definite and appropriate a lesson
as if it actually grew in some
corn-field of Marlboro or Richland.
?ni *
mere was a corn show in that
section, and L. B. Olore, a farw
mer of Franklin, Iud., had on exhibition
a single ear that he 5had
grown ? the culmination and
flower of years of hard labor and
painstaking cartj to produce a
perfect variety of corn. The ear
was large, white, full-grainedperfect
in every point. It captured
the prize, of course. At the
end of the show it was put up
lor sale to the highest bidder.
Olore could not go back home
without his prize ear of corn. lie
felt that as a progressive
farmer, the creator of the
best corn known to the be t
corn bait of the world, he could
not afF >rd to have the J "care of
years wasted by allowing the
seed to to other hands, lie
bid for the ear, but was astonished
to hear a rival farmer contesting
the field withdiirn. The
two kept on bidding, until sud
denly his competitor offered $'200
for the ear?the price of 200
bushels. He hastily called out
a still larger sum, and finally
carried off bis own prize by paying
$250 for the ear he had rais?
ed.
Clore's purpose was, of course,
to produce more of this match
less corn. This hadj been hie
purpose for years?to create a
^ perfect variety, and then tc

Carrier in Trouble. I
Charlotte Observer: The keeuness
with which Uncle Sam per- '

ed in the indictment and arrest j
of Mr. J. E. D aster, a rural mail i
carrier on a route from Waxhaw,
who was brought to the city yesterday
to answer before Commis* I
sioner J. VV. C >bb the charge
of appropriating 75 cents of another
party>s money. An old
negro, Adam tocFadden, is the
main witn038 find he alleues that
lie gave Mr. Doster $2 30 sometime
last October which lie wanted
him to send through a money
order to a liquor house to buy*a
gallon of boozo. lie further alleges
that the mail carrier
sunt his personal check f( r
$1.50 to the liquor house and
kept the remainder of tire money,
after paving 5 cents for the men
ey order, applying it to his own
use. The gallon of whiskey
came but it proved to be an in
fei ior graJe, and I lie old darky
discovered this fact. lie immediately
began to look around
with the result that government
inspectors got hold of the situation
and had the man indicted,
making th9 old negro the leading
witness against him.
District Attorney A. E. Holton
came in last night from Winetou.Salem
and started the ho iing
of Mr. Dostor before, Commist-ioiier
Cobb, but decided tiiatj
he would ask for a continuance
and the date of the trial was set j
for Tuesday, January 21st.

The blow which knocked out Corbet!

From the earliost days of tho ring the
knock-out blow was aimed for the jaw,
