Farmer Shot F rom Ambush.
Columbia special in Monday's
Observer: R. A. Jeffcoat, an
Orangeburg county fanner, was
brought to the Columbia Hospital
to-day with a buckshot in his
brain, one in his 9calp and two
in the shoulder, as a result of
being shot from ambush early
last night a few miles from his
home. Mr. Jeffcoat says that as
he was shot from the back, he

the shot in his brain, Mr. Jeftcoat
walked a mile and a half to the
home of Caleb Butler, colored,
on the road between the scene of
the shooting and Jeffcoat's home.

instantly killed this morning
about o'clock by one of the
Smitktown blockadors, the shoot
ing taking place in the heart of
the settlement while Mr. Hen

on this notorious blockading district.

One of the most deplorable i

Lancaster county occurred in '

between 11 and 12 o'clock, when a
