It is a matter of surprise that life term convicts are m de ! "trusties." 4 Mr. J. Belton W atson, ol Anderson, who attended a Farmers' Union meeting an Lancaster some time ago, has decided to become a candidate tor congress. The other candidates for congre-8 from his district are Congre s man Wyatt Aiken and Solicitor Bngiis. Since Presidentt Roosevelt is having poor luck bear hunting in LouUiuiu canehrakes, he might 9'< p in L ??tc sler on his return to Washington and get on the trail oi the mighty bruin that Messrs Simpson, Uives and Allison chased hereabouts a lev 3Tears ago. Our esteemed contemporary, the Associate R^'ormed Presbyterian, persists in spelling incorrectly the name < f one of itministers, the K v. O. W. Carmicheal, the popular pastor otj tlie iianc<8'er and Shiloh A R. P. church- . ]S ? oae kno-vs l et ter than the minister hirnsell how to spell his name, and he spells it just as we do. Our contemporary however, invariably makes it Carmical. Possibly the Presbyterian is experimenting with tlie phone'ic style. In appointing this week a member ot the Stale board ot education without even consulting Superintendent Martin, Governor Ansel has repeated the mistake made by him in the Sheppard incident. While the law makes it incumbent on the governor to appoint the members of w THE LANCA the State board, common cour- t teay as well as public policy i requires that such app >intmeuts i be made with the approval of t the Slate superintendent, the < officer who is direc'ly responsi-j i ble to the people for the success!) or failure of the administration 11 of ihe State's educational system, li Really, the board outiht to be j appointed on the recommenda lion of thq superintendent, un-j \ ? u:? : ... .1 IJ L. ? ; icss iu? nominees miuuiu ue positively known to the gover nor as parsons unfit for the position. I THE APPfiOACHING TOWN ELEC-, HON The following,Maken from 1 he i Newberry Observer, sounds s^rik-; ingly like it might have been! written lor Lancas'er: This town is coming clo-e to another dec ion. Th re was never a tiino when it was m >re important to put her best m< n in ofiioc. Newberry deserves the best, and there is 110 man it o good to he mayor or alderman ot this town. It is ol immense consequence to the finances, the morals, the nlerprise and general welfare of the town that she be represented kyS lepresentative men?men who will be able to help in the further development ol the town along right lines ; who will insist on obedience to law. who will put the right kind of officers in charge of the peace and good order ot the town; who will see that tlie laws arc respected and obeyed and the violators, white and black, are punished. 1' is a critical time in the history of Newberry, and our peo pie need to rca'izeit and to wake tip to their true interest. Lancaster, as is well known, now has good men in cilice, among th? m some of the best < and most prominent in the com munity, but ir is currently r< - ( ported th >t several of the j jv s , ent ollicials will not stand for reeiect'on. However that may he, it is not too soon for the voters ot the town to begin to think about the coming municipal election, which will be held in December. It is manifestly apparent Irom the tenor of his article that he himself is deeply prejudiced against railroads, and ho la\s h mse'f open to tbe suspicion that possibly he Ins some ulterior motive in keeping the public mind inflamed against corpora lions. We are not the champion o! railroad or other corporations On the contrary, we have incurred Ihe everlasting ill will of some of llieni by our criticisms of them in these columns. H it we believe in fair play , we bt ' lieve in doing justice even to the much despised corporations* While we believe in making tliem pay where they incur lia 45TER NEWS, OCTOBER 19, ! )ility, in damage suits or otherwise, we do not believe iu wreafcing vengeance upon tliera hrough the medium of the jourts. Ajuror, for instance, is sworn t?> decide the issues submitted to him according to the law and the evidence, and that oath is ju^t as binding in a case where a corpoiafTon is a party to the f-uit as it is in an action where the litigants are individuals. Preconceived opin ions and prejudices and specious arguments of counsel should cut no fifiure with an intelligent, fair-minded juror. . Our correspondent a?ks questions the answers to which'he already knows. ? e knows, for f x on pie, full well where the "thousands of dollars a- a railroad tax" the p ople o! this county are now j> ?ying go s. According lo our recollection the roiid A'a1" sold in Chester at at public auction and was purchased. mainly by Laoca-ter merchants, at 'ha sum of $25,000. It had been offered for sab', under order of court, on two previous occasions, when no bids at all were made for the property. If it had b?en worth mure thin the purchasers paid for it, why was th it there were no other bi 1ilers? The sale was public r-nd h id been extensively advertised. f)nr correspondent seek^ to produce the impression that the ' present owners" ari making money. We hope that they are, for they deserve success. Had it not been for t he ''present owners," the merchants of Lincaster, the r nad today would have been naught but "two streaks ol rust and a right of way " They took hold of the property* when no b >dy else would have it, rehabii itated it, broadened tiie gauge, buiit new hridires and trr-stle*, improved the rotdhed and bought new r >Ling stock. It was made a home enterprise, and we all know what a poential factor it has proven <o t?e in the upbuilding of Lancaster. No, we do not believe in jumplog on corporations just because they are corporations. They should he accorded ju-tice when jusiicois duo them, just as they shouhl he made am- nahle to law when they are guiltv ot infractions thereof. Nor ghodd we iivitiook or ignore me vast ami incalculable benefits that are derived by the public generally from properly managed c >rporations. They are among the c?untry's greatest developers. What would be the condition ot the country today without itw railroads, its cotton mills and other industrial enterprises? Lancaster Alone owes much oi its progress and development to its railroads, cotton mills and other corporations, which are now probably paying approxiy 190".. * ' raately half the taxes of the county and are furnishing ernplopment to thousands of our people. 'there is one feature about a cotton mill that is not generally appreciated, and that is the fact that it practically doubles the price ot cotton in the community and the county in v?h ch it is located. Instead ol say 11 cents, it ill ike3 it 22 cents.
