The "Holiness" Preachers. Complete Refutation of their Unjust and Unfounded, not to say Ridiculous, Charges against the Ministers and the Churches of Lancaster. i ?ii? * . . - ?.icoeu< ty several men claiming ip be preachers have been holding meetings in Lancaster. They liavo been criticising the pastors, the churches, and the people ot Lancaster very freeiy. They seemed to tliiuU they had a periect right to do this; but, strange to say, they and their followers don't think that the people ot Lancaster have a right to criticise them. It is a poor rule that does not work both ways. The tact is that some things they h ?v i been saving need to be criticised. 1 shall mention a few ot them. 1. They said the preachers ol today preach a sinning religion; they say a man can't live without binning ; and they say it is all right, to sin a little. That is the charge they made. They said this. Many people heard them say it. Is is true? Do the pastors say this? V^iere is the preacher who says it is all right to sin a little? Ha? any preacher any where said it at any place or at any time? I deny the charge. No preacher in South Carolina today could preach that way and have a hearing. 1 deny the charge that the pastors are so preaching as to encourage people to sin. It is utterly false. 2. We note a second assertion they made : "The bar-keeping, the saloon keepers, the preachers, the church members and the Devil are all locked arms together fighting holiness." That is a very broad charge. I shall ? speak only for the preuchers and chifrch members. All true preachers and church members are working tor Bible Holiness. But that is not necessarily the holiness that some people claim to have. Not every man who says he is holy is really so; no, not at. all But I return to this presently 3 They said: ikThe preachers don't like our preaching because it condemns them; it the preachers ot Lancaster wanted the people saved, why are they not here helping us? All they want is to get people to join the church so they can help to pay their salaries ; they don't c?re whether they are converted or not.'1 There are six white pastors in Lancaster and they are true and tried men. Not one of them asks an unconverted man to join hid church. Ail try to get men to accept Christ lirrft and then join the church. There is nothing secret about this.* They have preached it faithfully for years in public where everybody can % hear them. The whole community fully knows the above charge to be false. This charge that the preachers of Lancaster try to get unconverted people in their churches simplv for monej is equivalent to saying that the preachers of Lancaster are low down, cunn.ng tricksters, doing their work tor sh^er greed and gain. One of llie Lancaster pastors did a whole year's hard work on the factory hill without ever getting a single cent for it. Can any holiness preacher say as much? 4. They Baid : "There will be more preachers in hell than anybody else or any other class according to numbers". This reminds me of what a so-called preacher said on the street here j name time ago. He suid: 441 would rather have my rijrht arm cut otf than preach anything but the gospel.1' Thou said almost immediately : 4There*s a string ot preachers io lieil as loujr as the Southern Railroad" In his conception this last statement is a part of the gospel. MuBt wo think it as true asome ot the other statement" ihey made? 5. They said: "The preachers ot today are responsible tor nearly all, if not all, of the crimes of today." That is to sa> according to them the preachers of today are responsible tor the lies. ti"0 thefts, the murders, and all the other bad things. If thai is so, the preachers had better out of business. I 6uspect some of the so-called preachers are responsible for a good many wrone things. That is the report that follows some of them at any rate. The thinking people of the country and the world give a different version of the matter aqd say the preachers are doing much to retard and overthrow crimes But these little fellows buck us against the world. Call to mind the gnat on the ox's horn. 6. Again, one or more of them said : UA preacher, or any one, that chews or smokes tobac co is a slop tub from hell." How (lid he find that out? Has he been down there to see? lie teems to show familiarity with the place. 7. Again: "A man that smokes- cigarettes will steal." That sounds very much like a man whois telling his own experience. A man would hardly speak so confidently who had not been along that road himself. I am not a tobacco m m myself and therefore turn this point over t<> th?'S? who are. 8 "A girl who mi-behaves in in church is a harlot." Tins is another One of their "cut and| dried sayings.
