Practical Demonstration ol the Value of Peas as a _ Fertilizer. Rock Hill Herald: While pass ing through the Blacic Jack sec tion around Ogden about ten \ days ago, in company with Mr J. B. Davis, the writer was shown a field of corn on the l^aton wl O/*A ?? 1 1 *#hwd y idb i3 uoing woricea by Mr. Davis, which clearly demonstrates the value of peas as a fertilizer to the laud. The field in question wa? worked in corn last year and about half the field was also planted in peas, dropped between the hills of corn. This year the land was prepared alike, the corn all planted at the same time and cultivated alike, and the toame kind and amount <1 fertilizers used to each row. But the corn on the part of the field where the peas grew last year is almost twice as large as that on the other side of the field and has a dark green color, while the other looks yellow and has the t appearance of having been poor^ j\y worked and not fertilized at an. I5ut,as stated above, it has all received the same work and the same amount of fertilizer used on each row iu the field, but the difference in the corn is wonderful and it shows up plainly to the very row where the peas stopped off in the middle of the field. If the corn on the pea land keeps as far ahead of the other parL ol the field until gathering time as it now is, it will make almost, if not Altogether, twice as much corn to the acre. Astronomers Watching Mars The planet ot Mara, which may be seen any clear night low in the southeastern sky, is the most conspicuous object in the heavens and on *account of its nearness to the earth iR attracting considerable interest among astronomers. Named after the <jtocl ot War, it is easily recognizable on account of its red color, the hue and tint of blood. It can be best observed late- at night since it does not appear distinctly above the horizon uutil after 10 o'clock. Those who have watched it for several weeks past have observed that it has been increasing in brilliancy. I' is nearing ''opposition," when it is nearely in line with the earth and the sun. It reaches opposition Saturduy night. Interest among astrouomers is duo to speculation over the question as to whether the great planet is inhabited or not and kindred topics.?Charlotte Observer.
