Burbank has invented an odorless onion. Now if he will only come forward with a cabbageltss cigar! ? Atlanta Journal. And while lie's "coming forward" let him bring along with him a scentless automobile. A Detroit minister thinks that Satan rides in an automob le ? Atlanta Journal. Ii the par-on is right, Lancastrians are site as long as they stay* a' home, for the devil will never risk his midline over our loads and streets. Nearly all cities and towns have "dog ordinances"?laws forbidding dogs to run at large at this season ol the year, without muzzles. Lancaster should have such a regulation as a pro lection to its men, women and children. Since the f regoing ?a< put in type Council lias passed a "muzzle ordinance," as will be seen elsewhere. At a banquet of wholesale h ed men in New York a tew nights ago one of the speakers announced that a new irnit is i in hoy o ti goj which will be known as the "millionaire strawberry," and which will be "almost as large as a Burbank potato." Nothing ?o remarkable a1 out that. Mr R. T. Duulap, of Lancaster, raised some stravberries this season "almost as large" as Georgia yams. Jean Brun, who died at Geneva the other day at the advanced age of 102 years, said shortly before his death : "I have never consulted a doctor and have never taken medicine. I have drunk and smoked all my life, and with the exception of iny mother, have never kissed a woman.'' The statement is a remarkable THE one and suggests more than one ii question. Was it drinking and n smoking, or refraining from kiss- o ing women, or taking no medi- 1 cine that enabled Brun to reach t a "good old age"?or was it a s combination ot the several sup- s posed longevity promoters? On t the o her hand, might he not. have f lived many years longer had he < cut out liquor and tobacco, taaen j a handful of pills occasionally 1 and indulged in oscillatory exer- i cise with a pretty woman at < every opportunity? i ====== i THE BOY AS A STREET LOAFER. About the worst thing for a boy is for him to form the habit ol loafing on the afreets; tor in addition to the habit of idleness that it begets it is Mire to lead to other vices. We see very little hope lor the boy that habitually ] stands around on the streets, it , will not be long before he will be using profane language, pulf1 ng cigarettes, and doing other ( indecent tilings which are discredit able.--Greenwood Journal ; Our esteemed contemporary is , exactly right. Many a bov is ruined by habitual street loafing. It is only a question of time when he becomes a disgrace and a menace to society. As a remedy, the Journal suggests: * Give your boy employment. Iveep l?im everlastingly at it. <iid tie will be contented and remain at home. We hare heard >1 parents in Greenwood who are -eekinse employment h?r their boys with a view to keeping 1 hem out of mischief. They are i? be commended for their thought fulness. Lancaster, like Greenwood, has boys whose parents would do well to put themtosome kind ot work in order to keep them irouj constantly loafing on the streets and about the depots. Hut we do not believe that we have any girl loalers, as seems to be the ease with Greenwood, induing from the following de. : nverat-ce ot our conb mponiry : But the girls who loa'! Girls < loaf? Watch the streets. They will tell 1 ho tale. And then take ! a peep in the homes and see the tired, care worn mothers 1 We ( must be excused lrom discussing, 1 for the present, the evils ot the fair, giddy street loafers! SIDEWALK IMPUOVEMENT Wtnle walking up Railroad avenue Sunday morning we discovered the cement walk along that street to be in a filthy con di'ion. We suggest to the city lathers that they take this mat ier up at their next meeting and 1 see if some remedy can not bt* found. Ladies going to church in their nice while skirts will agree with us we know, for we 1 saw several expensive ones ruined Sunday. It would be an easy matter lor the merchants on that street to have the walk in front of iheir place of business clean *d oiTjust before closing time on Saturday. That would give the ( street a more inviting appearance ' to the ladies and strangers, too. ' fTU? i' .. _ I I ajio luirpniij;, wiiiuu it iitReil frotuthe Rock Hill Herald, sounds like a description of Lancaster's cement sidewalks on Sundays, doesn't it? It is just such a con J dition as The News has time and ' again called attention to with re- < ierence to our Main street pave- i ments, and the remedy suggested ' is the same that we have urged our merchants to adopt. Itisapity , that our only nice, up-to-date ! sidewalks should present the un < sightly and filthy appearance I that they do on the Lord's day. Speaking of sidewalks, isn't j LAN0&S1ER NEWS, JULY 3, " \ """" t time some more work of a per- a nanent character was being done I in the pavements of the town? iven those that received atteniou last year, that were graded ind surfaced with locks and dirt, ire now rough and needing work, he dirt having been washed off ind Iahvmil? in mn.nv nljip.ah rnokr >t irre.ular size and shape which ire exceedingly u%pleasant to walk on.
