J V] t<~ The Columbia State. l] Is the town of Kershaw in sc Lancaster or in Kershaw county? m This question is worrying ol the taxpayers and delegations of the respective counties. It has been in the court and general assembly and will probably come up jigmu at me coming session. !i Not only is Hie town of Kershaw h effected, bu' a considerable por- se tion of the surroundiug territory and thereby hangs an interesting story about counties, nude about 150 years ago. The stor\ is told by Capt. J. G. Richards, Jr., wlio is in the city. It seems that the surveyors for the two counties had agreed to run the line from a point near (j Bucklick, on the Wataree river, j, straight across thecountry, which n would have given Kershaw a p much larger area. The party ,r in going through the country, p however, stopped about 25 miles ,j from Bucklica and went down w into Kershaw to visit a "tavern." u The entertainment received there ,, was of such a pleasant natute t\ that they spent several days and j, starting out agaiu they lorgot . to go back to the point where ei they left off a few days before j and ran the line down into Ker- y shaw county. There has been ^ a dispute about the boundary p line ever since, especially 9ince ^ the town ot Kershaw was estab- p lished and a part of it is in each ^ county. Irj. At the session of the legisla-l tura in 1905 an act was passed p providing for a commission to y survey the county Hues The ^ commission did not finish the work, however, in the time prescribed by law and no report j was made of it. At the last session another bill was introduced ^ and passed the house, but did not reach the senate. The audi- 0 tor of Kershaw county, however, u had a survey made and Capt. j Richards says that the entire town of Kershaw will be placed a in lveishaw cunty. A report along this line will he made on this survey at the coming session nf 1 Atrial a' it ro [n In the meantime there is con j siderable confusion as \o the col- ^ lection of taxes and the comptroller general-has had a number ot appeals to decide.
