Over Hundred'Lives Lost in Flood in Mexico. Mexico City, Mex., Oct. 11.? Recent floods in the southern part of the State of Jalisco and in the State of Colimo have resulted in great destruction of property and loss of life. The number of fatalities from drown ing along the line of the Manzanillo extension of the Mexican Central Railroad is 113. Thousands of tons of earth and rocks descended in great landslides from the mountains. Many houses were destroyed by ilonds in the towns of Tuxpan and Za* potillic. Twenty-five lives were lost during the recent iloo Is in the Santiago river; 15 were drowned by the capsizing of a boat while crossing the river. Family of Former Citizen of Rock Hill Injured in Wreck. Rock Hill special in Charlotte Observer: A telegram was received this afternoon by Mr. R. M. London, from Samuel Mc uowd, or Washington, D. U., stating that Mrs. Edward Stitt and children had been perhaps fatally injured in an aocident at Belmar, N. J. This was the first known of accident here, and Mr. London has endeavored to get particulars from the North all evening, but at 6 :30 o'clock had received no news of the accident. Dr. Sti11 was an adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. London, and was well and favorabN known here. He is now a surgeon in the army and his family reside in Brooklyn. Mrs. John R. London, of Rock Hill, is now in Brooklyn on a visit to Mrs. Fitts'.and it is feared she was in the accident. . Hut there is no telling the length to which the clergy will go in the investigation of a subject in which they are interested. We suggest, however, with great dillidence, that either the Milwaukee minister, had a poor sense of proportion, or the proportions of the "other limbs" they had in their mind's eye were but poorly developed. The county lair, so strongly urged by the Lancaster News and the Era, has tailed to ma terialize for this year, but the project should not be abandoned. It should be kept agitated until it becomes an assured fact. We can think of nothing that would be more successfully in bringing together once a year the people from all parts of the county, and such an annual meeting of all the people would result iu bringing them into a closer bond of sympathy ami relationship wl'li each other. Besides this, an exhibition of products of the soil, stock and manufactures would promote attention to the production of the very best. Hut spasmodic and disjointed effort will never result in a fair being held in the county and we would like to see some of the leading spirits of the county take hold in earnest and push such an enterprise to successful completion. We are sure that much good would result from it. Exchange of School BooksInstructions by Supt. Martin. State Superintendent of Education Martin has issued a circular letter of instruction to oanty superintendents of education, calling attention to section* of the text book contract. The letter is as follows : My Dear Sir: Allow rae to call your attention to sections 5 and 10 of the text book contract. The publishers agree to take all text books of any series, or of any edition, in the hands of pupils in exchange. The only re strict ion is that the book must have been in use during the year 1906, and of course it must be ol like grade and upou the same | subject a* the one for which it is given in part payment. This means,of course,that books which are in use in the schools may be exchanged. The ret ail and exchange ' prices printed in our bulletin of 16 pages are official.
