I Condition of Cotton Crop Not ] So Good?Georgia's Peach 1 Industry?The Hot Cam-1 paign?Hoke Smith named as Winner in Gubernatorial ( Race?Another Lancastrian Locates in Macon. i Mr. Kiiior: Since our la^t 1 communication, we have heard a great runny had reporca on Hie cotton crop and there is no getting around the fact that there I has been considerable deterioration within the past several days. Whether or not this deterioration has been general over the entire cotton belt wo don't know. The excessive rains, followed by extremely hot weather, have certainly done considerable damage in some places. The peach season is rapidly coining t ? a close in Georgia. Lots of fine peaches have found lluir way to the not horn markets this season- The peach industry is growing rapidly in this state and many thousand trees are being planted every year. It is a business which seems to have a great ? deal of fascination about it, accor ding to the testimony of some of the peach growers, with whom \ we have talked about it, in addi- . tion to the handsome nrotits whaeh they reap from the sales. In a few days more, the primary election will have taken place ; will have become a thing of the past and not a few candidates will never exactly understand "how it happened" that they 1 failed to win. Hut they don't all win and the "faithful few" who do come out victorious should leel doubly thankful?first lie- ? cause it is till over with and sc- ( cond because they won, in such i a hot, vigorous campaign. This s is especially true in the guber . . t. natonai race. Wo think there if little iloubt as to the result of the race for 1 governor. There are live eandi- ' dates, it is true, but the race is really and truly between Chirk Howell and lloke Smith. 'Ihe race has been exceedingly warm ami lor continual mud slinging, which has la-ted tor months, has probably never belore been equaled in Georgia. There aie , three main Tacts, however, which in our opinion have won votes lor lloke Smith and which will make! him the next governor ot Georgia. They are. first, the Tact that lloke Smith is in favor of negro dis tranchisement; second, his sun I !? erior ability over Clark Howell, and third, llie fact that the re-L port lias been circulated that Mr. Howell \v?h dominated, by the railroads and other corpor-, ations. We are inclined to In*, lieve the report and Itilly believe that on 'lie da\ follow-ingthe election, the news will he llashe.d over the sta'e that lie has been badly de.eatod and that llokei Smith, whom the people believe] to be the champion oi their i rights, has be< n vietoiions. Several days ago, Mr. llarbeit Jforton, ol Heath Springs, came i over to Ceorgia, stopped a fewdays in Macon, and decided to! locate here, lie secured a nice position in the office* of one of tlie lnrge?t rail r->a1? lending oi' from Macon, and bis prospects for future advancement are very good.
