County Supervisor Gardner is i.?je most patient man of our acquaintance. For weeks and months our good roads friend, T. Macadam Belk, and others, but frineipally Mr. Belk, have been criticising the supervisor more or less severely, through the columus of this paper, for the erudition of the public roads. And yet Mr. Gardner has treated their onslaughts with philosophic sil soce. Such silence, however, should not be construed as an acknowledgment on the part of Mr. Gardner that all that has been said about him is true. He will doubtless make reply to his cri iics on the stump, during the campaign just opened. The pub lie, therefore, should suspend judgement until Mr. Gardner shall he heard from. We make this sta'ement. as an act of simple justice to Mr. Gardner and without his knowledge. We are taking no part either for or against any candidate in the j feld ; we desire to see them all treated alike so far as this paper is concerned, and although we I are not resnonsihl,' for ibr> uipuv r.T our correspor-dents, we feel f I bat possibly some injury may result to Mr Gardner's Candida j cj from the publication ofthej communications referred to if the tvwera should make up their blinds before lie irinp his defense. Yfhat that defence is we, oil course, do not know, but believing in fair plav, we ask that it La heard before the people pass judgment. ~ TREATMENT OF FARMERS AT STATE INSTITUTE There seems to have been a ?ooideulot dissatisfaction among the farmers who attended the State Farmers' Institute at the , r iiy nif.v were enteriaineu atl Llemaon this week. If conditions were no better than the reports ' ? icture them, then those who had I )? put up with the poor accom- j raodations had a rij;ht to corn j rlain. There is 110 excuse lor j ?ueh oversights, if we h tve been ! frliably informed, and we are I reasonably certain that such was J t'iie case-Greenville Daily iNews. Two of the Lancaster county I farmers who attended the State Institute have told us that they were not well treated afcClemsou laet week. ()..e of tlum, to whom we mentioned the matter yesterday, said that the tanners had to put up with miserable accommodations, that the bed rooms wer*1 not clean and that the table fare was very poor. He said about all they had to eat was "light bread and beet," and the latter, he said, was not half cooked. These are serious charges to make against the management of Olemson Colli co. and an exnlana tion should he promptly made by those in authority. It is possible, of course, that the conditions complained ot were unavoidable, but if so, the reasons therefor should be made public at once We are loath to believe that the otticers of the institution would intentionally mistreat their guests. Anent the institute of last cost much money and take up much time and are the outcome of much painstaking care and study and preparation are in progress hundreds of those who attend do not even take trouble to see, but lounge about on the campus smoking anil chewing and drinking." Those charges are also serious, and so far as the farmers of Lancaster countv who were present a.^e concerned, they are absolute lv without foundation. We are personally acquainted with the Lancaster men who attended the institute and we know t em to be sober, intelligent, progressive and successful farmers, ^outh Carolina has no better "quality1* of citizenship than these men represent, and tiiev went to Clem > 1 son-not to "frolic," but to acquire i information and knowledge along! I the lines of their life-work, fjpm.l iug. They were alter new ideas | and new methods, the bot'er loj enable them lo carry on their' agricultural operations at home. They live w 11 at home, know what hospitality is and certainly expected tetter treatment a* j Clemson than they are said to j have received. The Chester Lantern criiicises at length tlie attitude ol Con pressman Kinley with reference to tlie proposed location !ur the federal court house -ea-t of! Rroad river," under the terms of a, bill that has been before Congress j Tor some time creating a new ludicial district in this State. Ah is well known, Chester and dock Hill are rivals for the ilace. The Lantern says iVIr. Kinley is supporting Rock Hill because he promised that town en years ago to do so. Our con week, a Columbia special in Mon (l.iv'n ('lliirlnl In (M>toruai>i.'Qi)c tended these institutes that they come merely for a frolic, to be fed and housed cheaply, that they are trillers who come for a good time and do not try to benefit by the lectures and experiments given, and that consequently the institutes do them no good Whi'e interesting experiments and demonstrations that "It is not unlikely tliat the (Jlemson board of trustees *ill adopt some method ol changing the quality ol the attendance j which shows up at the annual State farmers' institute held at Clemson. It was a particularly trying bunch that the professors and others who had the last institute in charge had to deal with. It complained against a a large number of those who at temporary contends that Chester is a more suitable location, and that Mr. Finley "had no right to mako a pl?dge tha* would require him to favor one part ol his district in any matter that might arise to the disadvantage of another part and of the district as a whole, and against the petition and protest of all the counties concerned except the one which includes the locality favored." Why not settle the matter by having Lancaster chosen as the place for the federal court to meet? We have good railroad facilities, conven ient schedules, fine hotels and boarding houses and the best people on earth?an ideal place for Uncle Sam to dispense justice. Baptists as well as Methodists seem to be "down on" the dispensary. More than one Metli ( diet conference has recently by resolution condemned the insti tutioii. The Piedmont Baptist Association, embracing churches ill both Anderson and Pic hens counties, at its meeting last week, passed similar resolutions. There's no mistaking the senti ment of G or^ia as to bucket shops, judging by the promptness ; i.i. u:?u i l. - 1?:_i >Yiiu wiinii me legisiHmre, now in session in Atlanta, has passed an act forbidding the operation of such concerns in the state after January 1st, 1907. Not. only bucket shops, hut exchanges as well, are included in the provisions of the act. All places where "opti ma on futures" are bought and sold are placed under the ban of the law. Only three votes in the Senate were cast against the measure, when it passed that body last Thursday. County Itinerary?Where and When Camliilates will Speak.
