Drake had learned in some way (
of Emerson's visits to his daughter.
At mid'dght, evidently sure
of liis man, Drake opened the
door of his daughter's bed-room
and without a word opened fire
on Emerson, who was iu the <2
room witli Miss Drake. The j.

allots went wild. Emerson, at e
the first shot, pulled his pistol j,
and fired, killing Drake instant- (
ly. Emerson then surrendered.
Drake was 50 years old and
one of the most prominent plant j

declared that, the judge had
granted a habeas corpus to John
Williams, a white man, and saved
Williams' neck. But when ^
it came to his (Fletcher's) case 1
the court went fishing. Fletcher I
said that "going fishing" was '
given as an excu-e for the judge 1
to leave town to avoid granting I
a habeas corpus. t

Farmer Killed in Runaway.
Boston, Ga., 12.?J G.Miller,
a prominent citizen of this community,
was instantly killed yes

his farm and had his family with

Miller was seriously injured and

A Fiend's Work.

today'attacked Gracinio Magia,
an Italian farmer living near
Woodbury, and criminally assaulted
Magia' wife, alter compelling
her to give him her savings,
$700. Magia was beaten
into insensibility and is dying at
the hospital here. His wife is in
a critical condition at her
home.
South Carolina's First Bale-From
Bamberg, as Usual.
Bamberg special in Saturday's
State: For the filth consecutive
year Bamberg markets the
first bale of new cotton. Today
Mr. II. C. Folk shipped by express
a new bale of cotton to
Messrs. Pope & Fleming, cotton
(actors of Augusta, Ga. The bale
weighed 400 pounds. It will probably
be auctioned off.
Abe Simmons, who works a
farm for Mr. Folk, has become
known as the grower ol the first
bale and it has become a regular
thing for him to carry off tlie

was shipped to Charleston on
August 3; in 190 4 the bale was
sent to Charleston, August 13,
