T:ie Hon. Cole L. Blease, judgiiC - rnm Ilia cnoar>li Knrn loci C,( .- -TV Vili ?'1V7 U v VII IIXJISJ * rtO V uai" ! w-ijiy, is under the impression I Cuttt conditions have not improv-j a Lancaster since the voting 0*6 of the dispensary. In fact,' Lie has been correctly reported, is lot on'iy believes that there ijae been no improvement, but oafc conditions are even worse t:vn formerly, for lie is quoted *1 saying, ''There's more liquor 'ttxnk in Lancaster county now ulan there was before you voted st the dispensary.'* According to our observation *nd information, Mr. Blease does -bmcaster a gross injustice. We an not a prohibitionist, and in Ae slection held in this county fest October we supported the iipensary, believing it to be a voir policy to retain the system ni'til the legislature could be ?v*en an opportunity to provide abetter method tor the regulaiwn of the liquor traflic rather! unu experiment Willi prohlbl ^.toii, but we deem it nothing but Ttjht and proper to accord to t*e prohibitionists all the credit cNjl- them. Our impartial judg ?*:ut is that, owing to the untiractivity of the Anti Liquor league and the vigilance ot the w-fci-e officers, there is very much j fas drunkenness, and consequent l*f>iderly conduct, in Lancaster > )ay than there was a year ago. j As was to he expected, tlie ex tress receipts of liquor have lyteatly increased, and occasion uiy we hear of a blind tiger get?.?g into the toils of the law, w?ir the consumption of liquor is (*vrtainly by no means as great when the dispensary was open. ?ow' long present conditions will Inst remains to be seen. We are | xi 1 v dealing with the record as | *0 find it now. It is not ourj purpose to indulge ill any pre cie.t.Hina MB '> l1i? *W INCIDENT OF THE PRESS ASSOCIATION RECALLED. In a previous issue of The News directed attention to the fact 11 .Nat Colonel William Hanks, o! I Columbia State, in his in j uosely interesting sketches of j *io members present at the recent 1 meeting of the State Press Asso ciation, stated tha . B. K. Wylie, of The hi er News, along with others mentioned, ''represented the Seceder element of the association." We, at the same time, knowing Mr. Wylie to be a staunch Presbyterian? at least while at home?stated that it was in order for Col. Banks or Mr. Wylie to explain how the latter happened to get his religion mixed during his so jouru in the city by the sea. We also suggested that most likely Charleston's famous Goose Creek water had produced a bad effect either on Col. Banks or Mayor A'ylie. And now comes the genial and talented Colonel and kindly throws a flood of light on the mystery. In a note to the editor,! he says : 'Mayor Wylie experienced an entire change of heart at the Isle of Palms and wanted Rouse's version of the Psalms adopted as the ritual of the association." That lets Col. Banks out of it, but how about Mayor Wylie?? Is it possible that salt water and surf bathing will make a red-hot Seceder out ot an all-wool-and-ayard wide Presbyterian ? SOME ADVICE BY ONE EDITOR TO ANOTHER. The editor of the esteemed Lancaster News seems to be mightily interested in trying to find out what a -'peek-a boo" waist is.? Fie upon thee, Brother Connors ! B tter curb that curiosity. It might lead you into trouble. Or, if it gets the best of you, take a trip to Wrightsyille Beach and iaye your curiosity satislied.? Rock Hill Record. Fortunately or unfortunately? depending upon the viewpoint ? we possess no railroad pasteboard, but when walking gets easy, contemporary, we shall adopt your suggestion as to taking a trip to the sea-shore, as we will thereby be enabled to kill two birds with one stone?not only get a peep at a peek a boo, but also see what we have never yet "laid eyes on"?a woman in a bathing suit ! The fact of the matter is we have never seen a bathing suit itself, not even one 'hanging on a hickory limb,'1 much loss coyly clinging to femininity of divine form. You will readily perceive, therefore, that our education has been sadly neglected along these lines?or curves. In the meantime, contentpor ary, maybe you can give us some idea as to what a peek-a-boo looks like; also, a bathing suit. THE STATE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR COLORED TEACHERS. Principle M. D. Pee. of the colored graded hcIioo! of Lancaster, who is one of the instructors in the state summer school for negro teachers now in session at Benedict College, Columbia, writes us: The State Summer School for Negro Teachers opened wi:h 102 teachers in attend ance. There were 62 in the State Teachers' Association. All negro teachers should be here." According to the Columbia Record the school's enrollment Ira-* since reached 1!>3. The first lecture of the course, says the Record, was delivered by Principal Lee. "Books and Iiow to Read 1'hem" was his subject. I He urged the teachers to organize reading circles in their communities and pay more attention to the reading habits of the pupils under their charge." As previously published, the county campaign opens at Belair August 14th. The full list ol appointments will be published again before the meetings b gin. Ill order that the public generally may see how the various candidates stand on the issues of the dav, The News has arranged for the publication of reports of the first two meetings, at least.?' Speeches at the remaining meetings will also be reported if they do not prove to he repetitions ol the introductory ones. The News congratulates its esteemed Rock Hill contemporaries on tl eir recent evidences of prosperity. The Record has just mov ed into new and better quarters and the Herald has installed a new press. The News is a!so keeping up with the procession. It received yesterday a modern paper folding machine and has ordered an uptodate printing press, which is now on its way to Lancaster Iroin the factory. The News is certainly going to "spread out" and make things hum when all of its new machinery shall be ins ailed. Secretary Cheatham Cen- j sured by Committee of Investigation. Atlanta, CJa.
