Attention, Cotton Growers! * if Stirring Address by President 6 Smith, ot the State Cotton p Growers' Association, in Which he Appeals to FarP mers to Keep Staple off the h Market Certain Months. c ii On account of my sickne I o have been unable to keep in ^ touch with the people of the r State through the press. I do not (| want any one to imagine that f< the work of the Association has il in any-wise lessened. i< I take this opportunity to call e the attention ol all the Assoeia- g tion to the fact that from Stats in the Union there comes u reliable information of material J crop damage. There seems to be n little prospect of a crop exceed- o ine eleven million bales. The world consumed last year twelve million, five hundred bales; the g consumption this year will prob- n ably reach twelve million, seven hundred and fifty thousand bales. Therefore, not only for the p remainder of the year, but for all of next year, there will be practically no cotton in stock. If there ever was a time when the ? Southern Cotton Association as an organization could demon- a atrate its power, that time has ar- t^ rived. A strenuous effort should b be made to keep the cotton from li the market during the months h of September, October and Nov- o ehnber. for this is the time when a the speculators and the mill men si lay in their supplies at the p lowest possible price. Because si ^hey recognize that this is debt- t' paying time, and that the small n farmer, the man who needs every si cent that his cotton can he t] made to bring, that this is the si time he will be forced to part n with his crop. si The Southern Cotton Associa- tl tion should bend every effort ti this September, as soon as cot- n ton begins to come to the market, b u> usu us organized uuuiority to s keep every bale possible ofF a the market. si * Year before last wo began the it year with considerable stock tl carried over from the enormous a fourteen million bale crop; this tl year we will beein the cotton it year of 1900 and 1907 with b practically no old col ton on hand, t< and with the world demanding more cotton than the new crop 11 can supply. ii. n Therefore, 1 call upon every i, association in every county in a the state to meet at once and ^iyiso ways and means by which ? tn every county and township they can make arrangements to keep the cot I on off the market during the first of the cotton ^ MI uy an muaiis uvuimuiu, () TJ10 prospect in S?uth (Jaro. t lina, as I know from personal |( olArvation, is the poorest for ^ te^i years. . The country is being Hooded w with poor literature; every in- t< genuity known to the opposition d , V! being used to depress the . price of cotton. Eternal vigilance is the price * * of all success and simply be- ti cause we have succeeded in gain J ing and maintaining such a fine j] price for cotton let no man ima- d # - * in? that the opposition lias | reakened its force at all, for it i fighting more vigilantly than ver before. To show you the tremendous ower of the Association, tor the rst time in the history of cot>11?cotton lhat is chalk and aper cotton which heretofore as controlled tlie place of spot otten?was 100 points higher 11 New York than the spot coton was in Columbia, South Car lina Which means that the amblers and speculators could un paper and chalk up and own to suit their fancy. But >r one time in t he history of he cotton grower he did not al>w the spot cotton to be influnced by any such gambling ymnactics. My healtb is steadily improvig, and I shall be glad to adress mass meetings during the lonth ol Aumist in Smiiti n?r o Una. Let every association be wide wake, up and doing; for the reate8t part ot our existence is ow in our hands. E. D. Smith. lightning Kills Three Mules and a Lot of Rats. Lock Hill Herald.
