A controversy has been goinp on for some time between two uvai luiinuwtuiurera di scales in which the general public is deeply interested. Of course the con aimer or buyer doesn't care who makes the scales used by his merchant or butcher, provided the machine registers honest weight; hut when lie finds that there is a difference in scales, that some give just weight while others do not, he very naturally wants to know the cause of such differ ence. Any perse who has ever had any experience at all in such matters knows that scales may now and then, through lack ol attention and proper regulation, get out of fix and fail to weigh accurately, just as a watch or clock may occasionally tail to Keep uuireci nine. 1 no people know that sueli-irregiilarities are liable to happen, and when they do occur they occasion no surprise and no one is suspected ol intentional deception. Hut when a manufacturer ol sca'os deliber-l ately and boldly proclaims i effect that hi.s weighing device are so constructed that they pi v. j the seller an advantage over the buyer it is high time for consumers and the public generally to sit up and take notice. It is no wonder, therefore, thai j great, interest vv is manifested throughout the c uintry when it became known some time ag > that a certain scale maker was muling out she following eircn I lar to dealers: Can yon do tais on your scale? Buy 20 pounds of pork loins at It cents per pound, retail litem] fo your trade ai the same price, and get your money hack? We can on our scale and make you u percent profit besides. If your easiness amouuis to $10 a day .111 sales, we can earn you 301 cents in fractions you don't get j now. Thirty cents a day mean> * you ! uy this scale every 180 day?. i How long have you been in bus < mcs ? Ilow many have you i bought in that time? 'Ihink of i? 1 ?one scale lost every six months 1 Let our man i>r vo litis. If eiveali uiie butcher the odd tractions to ( whicu he is justly entitled. This ( le.tturo alone, in the average tmeat and produce market, willjl not only save the coat of scale It i in h short time, but in a large ma:kit will save clerks' hire, which saving on the old pound and ounce scales, is entirely lost. A rival in the business, upon the appearance of the foregoing circular, lost no time in using it to the disadvantage of the con cern which boasted of making a scale which yielded a profit of three per cent to the seller, even when selling at cost. The mat ter finally got inco the United States court, where a decision was rendered against the maker of t he scales especially designed to discriminate against the buyer, i A practical test of the scale was made during the trial of the case, of which the judge who render I ed the decision said : A demonstration of the operalion of the scale before us at the hearing confirms the belief thai by its use the purchaser never gains, out the seller generally, possibly not always, and that this gain would be as much as or more than o per cent, apparent ly considerably more. The thanks of the public are centainly due the manufacturer who so effectively gave publicity to the extraordinary, one-sided features of his competitor's weighing machine. THE TILLMAN-LYON INCIDENT. T .. i. i ? i _ \ r in h spcecn in v^uiumoia ivion day night Senator Tillman made a sensational attack on Mr. Lyon, one of the candidates for attorney genera!, charging him with being a malicious slanderer and liar.? The attack was provoked, the Senator said, by the failure of Mr. Lyon to acknowledge by per sonal let?er or otherwise that he had done him a gross injustice when a few months ago lie gave publicity to a rumor that, the Senator had been given a piano by a whiskey house, the rumor having been promptly shown to be false. The daily papers of Wedne day contain a statement from Mr Lyon in which he admits that the > ispensary investigating committee, ot which he is a member, failed to secure evidence to sub stantiate the rumor as to the piano. In his card Mr. Lyon 0 l\J 3. "About I lie piano incident. The committee employed a do tective (o report ;ill he could find relative to all dispensary affairs. The detective formally and in writing reported to the commit t o that the Mill Creek Drilling Company had given to Governor i'lllman a p alio I> was the duly 01 the committee, as 1 saw it, to i.quire into such a report. Mr. Ila.yt-g was seen and tailed to confirm the report submitted to the committee. After Inquiry by committee tailing to secure any creditable evidence, the piano incident was dropped and forgotten, especially as Mr. M. A. Malone had previously fully explained the purchase of a piano in 1891. It was never ciiarged or stated by me that Governor Tillman bad gotten a piano from a whiskey bouse, but there was a rumor to the Biiect, anil that there was a rumor to that ellect * lie oflicial re j [jords of 'ho sub-committee will < show.
