S. 0. W Dear Sir: ^ ag Your letter of the 5th sii instant received. I arn glad to mi know that my letter was deemed th worthy of publication, and thank Hi you for the kind words you say Ke about it. As historian of our th Camp of Wheeler's Confederate 80 Cavalry, I come into possession dii of many incidents connected with the Civil War, which, together ed with my personal reminiscences ne of those stirring times, might be '? w4oven into stories of more or m Jss interest. m' LAt the time of our service in lu an<l tho Oarolinas, the oc ^^war was drawing to a close, dis- tl<] cipline had inevitably become re laxed, which gave opportunity to ox silt back to the rear, the skulkers, m. the weak and the timid, leaving lo; those who still rode at the front as hardy and brave and reckless a set of men as ever fought for du any cause. Their blood was up, '01 and when they met the enemy, (o either as individuals, squads, 1,1 companies or regiments, it meant a'1 light?sometimes with and as hti olten without orders. Some of a i these encounters were desperate, 1 h and tho fatalities among the ? cavalry was in consequence olten fearful. Cioneral Wheeler's last th official report shows that his com mand lost in killed and wounded C() 13 brigade and division com- 1 manders and 3200?enlisled men, out of a total of a lit t le over 5<M)U, ' 1 a year previous. ? I bii Connected with these encoun-1 111 ters were many incidents of a sl< ' ' nature, but in most cases I an would bo unable to give localities rn in your State, as our men were ln mostly from Alabama, Georgia, 1 '* V Texas, Arkansas, etc., and were i 7 7 tie r A not familiar with the geography fe of tho Carolinas, and, moving! n< rapidly, dates are generally im a possible to be supplied. Cf course, 1 do not like to veil upon such incidents, and find that the participants are Len reluctant to give details, e are old men now, and with e comes collection, and no dee to boast of lives of fellow en taken in youth, even though e homicides were justifiable, it "leet wo forget, lost we fort," may be it is not amiss chat e younger generation learn mething of what their fathers d and suffered. But mixed along with the tragy, comedy was often promint, and on this feature I am tid of dwelling. As stated, when en of the different uniforms St, they fought, and sometimes dicrous things happened, and casionally very foolish ones me. Among these (apologiz g for mentioning a personal ploit) was two companions and yself attacking General Negy's division. But you can understand, can you not, how that at this season of the year when summer business is nearly over that a legitimate store may wish to close out many lines they have bought too many of. Many merchants buy job lots and poorly made goods to spring on the people at this time of the year, but look out for these fake sales.
