named Abe Hamberger, of Baltimore,
in which Hamberger fold
him that he had gotten an order
for $07,000 ^worth of whiskey
from the State dispensary and
had to pay $8,000 to a member
of the board of control for it.?
Hamberger would not give the
)^ame of the dispensary oflicial
and did not say when the order
was obtained. He said this was
the only order he ever got from
the dispensary. Hamberger last
^ugust repeated tins statement
fix Baltimore in the presence of
Mr. Bristow's partner, Jesse li.
Smith. Bamberger told them he
got the bribe hack by doctoring
the whiskey, which was so mean
he feared it would be shipped
back. He said he paid the bribe
in cash.
Attorney General Youmans today
rendered an opinion as to the
legal phases < f the Black Lyon
affair, touching the question of
the Governor's action in the
premises. The tendency of the
opinion is that the Governor has
authority to remove for the

Prominent Mill Man Refuses
to Answer Questions of Dispensary

Lewis W. Parker, president of

the committee this morning lor
refusing to detail a conversation
he had in confidence with a whiskey
man, and he was immediate- C
ly placed under nominal arrest
in charge of Marshal Strickland
until the supreme court can pass
upon the habeas corpus case,
which Mr. Parker's attorney, 11.

The Vice-President's Slip at
the Methodist Conference.
An amusing incident took place
at the Friday night's session of
the General Conference of the M.
K. Church, South, at Birmingham,
during the address of VicePresident
Fairbanks, and an in
cident withal that resulted in
some embarrassment to the VicePresident
of these United States.
According to the delegates from
this section to the General Conference,
who were present during
the address, Mr. Fairbanks, alter
speaking in his cold, dignified
manner for several minutes,
warmed to his subject and plead
for harmony, peace and unity.?

shouted:
"Brethren, 1 tell you that this
country needs more than any- '

It was a slip of the tongue.
The Vice President had intended
saying a "united Methodism."

and visitors drawn to the big
convention hall by the presence
of the distinguished speaker, was ^
next in an instant and deafening
shouts and laughter followed the
